We’re hosting a Climate Week tour of the Gowanus redevelopment - the result of a community-based planning effort that transforms the federal superfund site into a neighborhood that was recently rezoned for 8,500 new housing units. Co-hosted by the @u_soa @lllilywonlll, @miami_cucd @tomhklein, and @miamiresilience @jenpos, the tour will share insights into the policy, planning, and design tools used to implement this vision from the designers, policy makers, and community advocates who made it happen! Please join us and our partners @miamiresilience and @bpcparks at @climateweeknyc for our symposium “Absorb, Adapt, Thrive: Nature-Based Infrastructure for Coastal Resilience” at Wagner Pavilion. This day-long event includes interactive workshops, tours, and conversations that will strategize how we scale nature-based solutions that tackle the challenges facing our communities.

Session 01 will bring together researchers on the cutting edge for an interactive conversation about how we move from knowledge to implementation.

Session 02 will explore how nature-based infrastructure supports community resilience in three geographies at three different scales.

What will it take to mainstream nature-based solutions at scale in our cities? Session 03 moves the conversation from “interesting projects” to “system-wide design and adoption.”

The day will conclude with a Resilience Happy Hour and site tours of South Battery Park City Resiliency and Battery Park City Resilience.

Tuesday, March 31, at 6:30 pm, architects Xiaoxi Chen, Lily Chishan Wong, and André Santos convene a gathering to present their work-in-progress multimedia project, Ta-Chim: Weighing a City’s Colonial Legacies. It traces the shifting political, material, and sensorial relationships between urban artifacts in Lisbon and Macao in search of postcolonial futures. “Ta-chim” translates to “balances” in Patuá, a critically endangered creole language developed in Macao, which was a Portuguese colony until 1999. The ongoing project was first exhibited at the 2025 Lisbon Architecture Triennale to ask: how does a city’s colonial legacies weigh against the seafaring rituals of homelands? Ta-Chim assembles archival images, films, performing bodies, and 3D scans to map circulations of post-colonial and diasporic matters and bodies.

Lily Chishan Wong’s performance “Rubberizing Histories” invited the audience to reflect on the unarchivable humans and more-than-humans that enabled the construction of botanical knowledge and cultivation of rubber-producing plants. From groups of indentured Indian workers to the “long-bearded Singhalese” who helped refine tapping Hevea brasiliensis, glimpses of them can be found on the margins of institutional archives. Led by Professors Pablo Sequero (Syracuse Visiting Critic, partner at SalazarSequeroMedina) and Lily Chishan Wong (UM Assistant Professor, Syracuse Boghosian Fellow ’22–’23), our new Seaside Adaptations initiative brings Syracuse and U-SoA students together to tackle the pressing realities of climate change in Miami and New York.

This four-year collaboration, supported by Perkins&Will, connects shared studio work, public programming, and cross-city dialogue to explore architecture’s role in coastal resilience. By focusing on adaptive design within existing urban fabrics, the studios challenge students to imagine—and shape—collective, climate-secure coastal futures.

Special thanks to Dean Michael Speaks of Syracuse University and Dean Rodolphe el-Khoury of U-SoA for their continued support.
