Cent'anni a Roma: 100 Years of Abbey Artists at the BSR. Opens 4/11/26 at the British School at Rome
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
In 1996–97, Alexandra Baraitser was awarded the nine-month Abbey Scholarship in Painting at the British School at Rome. During her residency, she studied the city’s cultural heritage, creating works in response to Roman frescoes and architecture.

Since then, Baraitser has continued to explore the relationship between painting, architecture and the built environment. Drawing on twentieth-century modernist design and the visual language of domestic interiors, her paintings examine the shifting boundaries between figuration and abstraction.

Nearly thirty years after her time in Rome, Baraitser’s solo exhibition, 𝑰 𝑱𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝑮𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒂 𝑫𝒐 𝑰𝒕, is now on view at Tiderip in London. Bringing together a new body of paintings alongside an earlier work from 2006, the exhibition offers a perspective on the continuity and evolution of her practice.

Baraitser will also participate in Cent’anni a Roma: The Abbey Awards, 1926–2026, a centenary exhibition at the British School at Rome bringing together works by Abbey Award alumni from across generations, alongside archival material celebrating the Awards’ hundred-year history.

Drawing and Puppet Figures: From Unstable Images,

Susanne Clausen works with drawing and painting alongside hand-made figures that act as sculptural doubles across installations and performances. Her drawings build through repetition, erasure, and reworking, using archival photographs, found and historical images as unstable points of departure. At the British School at Rome, she will develop work that draws on Italian puppet theatre history, treating the drawn image as a stage or threshold, a space that shapes how figures appear and withdraw.

Delighted to announce that Mikey Thomas will begin a nine-month Abbey-funded residency at the BSR in October 2026.

“I’m deeply grateful to the Abbey Council for facilitating this opportunity to develop my work within such an exceptional research environment. During my residency at the British School at Rome, I'll be pursuing a new body of material research through painting, engaging with the internal grammar of the Baroque.”

Excited to announce that Luke McCreadie will be among the next cohort of Abbey Awardees, arriving January 2027 to undertake a 3 month Abbey Fellowship at the BSR -

"Food, sculpture and the dominance of the image: Softness, hardness, meats, bones and vegetables."

Luke says:
My practice is founded in the image as the dominant mode of the day and how it is used in the descent or ascent of material into immaterial data for exchange. A condition intensified by platforms such as Instagram. It has recently expanded to include edible facsimiles—like plant-based scallops in 3D-printed shells—treating food as another mode of image production and consumption. During the residency I would triangulate food, image, and sculpture through Rome’s material history and archaeological fragments.

🏡Meet the artist: Danny Leyland

Abbey Scholar @abbeyawards Danny Leyland @danny_leyland has spent his residency collecting images of houses, cabins and shelters - spotted in mosaics, museum models and postcards found in a Swedish flea market - building a visual language around what it means to withdraw from the world, and the impossibility of ever fully doing so.

His project, "Conjugations of Displayed Images," moves through Etruscan hut urns, archaeological shelters and the idea of the 'cabin album', while staying rooted in the present.

Details of my Abbey Fellowship Award at The British School at Rome from Jan - March 2026 are now online at the Abbey Awards website. So it goes…
British artist David Osbaldeston’s work moves fluidly between drawing, print, painting and collage to explore power relations between the personal and systemic.

Extract from David’s ‘Meet the artists’ BSR blog ….further info see link in bio

“What became evident was a need in the studio to position each pair of paintings with photo documentation as posters in a bid to close the gap between the work and its wider context”

The artist would like to express warmest thanks to The Abbey Council and all at The British School at Rome for the facilitation and support in the realisation of new work.

David Osbaldeston, Abbey Fellow Jan-March 2026: "In any city, but particularly in Rome, what often appears constant is the presence of a conspicuous authority where distinctions between the demarcation and politicisation of public space are difficult to avoid. These are diversions."

💫 Meet the Artist: Susie Green 💫

Abbey Fellow @abbeyawards Susie Green @susiegreen_ (January–March 2026) reflects on her residency at the BSR in a new blog—sharing how her time in Rome reshaped her research and artistic practice.

Working across painting, performance, and sound, Susie creates vivid, colour-saturated worlds where feminine figures claim power. Her work draws on themes of dress, fetish, and disguise, staging bodies on the edge of transformation—caught between pleasure, tension, and release.

In Rome, her research began with the ornate excess of Baroque frescoes, but quickly evolved into something more immersive: a journey through a “body of Rome.” From Bernini’s 'Ecstasy of Saint Teresa' to the illusionistic ceilings of the Chiesa del Gesù, Susie explored mouths, thresholds, and interiors—spaces where bodies dissolve, shift, and re-form. Back in the studio, these encounters inspired her “Baroque Machines”—imagined, ornate structures designed to hold and transform the exhausted body, offering moments of relief, pleasure, and metamorphosis.

pic 1) For the upcoming Abbey Centenary show: Cent'anni a Roma, (BSR, 4th November -18th December 2026) we hope to include some archival material to illustrate the 100 year history of Abbey awards. Here we are doing some homework in the archive, a few years ago - with archivist Mark Pomeroy - Danny Rolph, Catrin Huber, Susannah Hyman's yellow scarf, Megan Watkins, Peter Brades, Mark and the late Andrew Stahl. @britishschoolatrome #royalacademyarchive #abbeyawards @andrewstahl1
pic 2) Feb 2026 On Peter Brades' last day everyone stood in the corner - from left to right Bernice Donszelmann, Danny Rolph, Sacha Craddock, Peter Brades and Vanessa Jackson. Trustees of the Abbey Harris Mural Fund and members of the Abbey Council. Peter Brades decided to step down in February, and the Council will miss his calm insight, knowledge and support - not to mention commitment - after more than 30 years on the Abbey Council Peter only missed one shortlisting meeting. He Chaired the Abbey Harris Mural Fund for many years and was responsible for getting the fund back on its feet 💯
