I’m looking forward to presenting my forthcoming multi-year project, Reconstructing Uravan, at Reframing the Archive: International Conference on Photography and Visual Culture tomorrow at 11:30am (UK time).

I’ll discuss this ongoing collaborative project as a counter-archive of Uravan, Colorado—an erased uranium-mining town whose buildings were demolished and buried after it was designated a Superfund site. Bringing together wet-plate collodion tintypes, oral histories, archival materials, and environmental traces, the project centers former residents as collaborators and co-producers of historical knowledge.

My presentation considers how artistic practice can intervene in institutional archives, bringing lived experience, embodied memory, and material evidence into dialogue with industrial records.

@archivopapersjournal presents the 7th edition of the REFRAMING THE ARCHIVE @reframingthearchive

VISUAL THINKING AND FUTURES OF DEMOCRACY
PHOTOGRAPHY, ARCHIVE, AND POLITICAL IMAGINATION

How do images shape democratic life? Not only as records of politics, but as forces that constitute visibility, authority, and participation?

This conference examines photography and archival practices as contested sites where democracy is made, negotiated, and disrupted: between evidence and control, memory and exclusion, protest and institutional power.

Randolph College’s 115th Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art, American Solastalgia, explores a changing American landscape and the emotions it evokes in those who call it home. The term “solastalgia” is used to express the sense of loss or longing individuals and communities experience when environmental change—through events like wildfires, floods, or drought—reshapes their home beyond recognition.

The exhibition features works by contemporary American artists Hannah Chalew, Nancy Cohen, Kate Greene, Abbey Hepner, Nathalie Miebach, Cara Romero, Jon Verney, and Joshua Villalobos. Guest curators: Charlotte Hecht and M. Stang. by @abbeyhepner

I'm thrilled to have my recent work showcased at the Singapore International Photography Festival. The work will be on view from October 16th to December 6th at the beautiful Esplanade Theatres on the Bay in Singapore.

I just shipped off a large series of portraits on milk jars, created with the liquid light darkroom process, and a set of framed images created with handmade milk beads. I am so happy that the curators saw the value in displaying the physical objects. They are handmade, unique objects made with a labor of love. So much thought and care has gone into incorporating them. Thank you, Cavin, Clara, Gwen, Pamela, and all the organizers.

I’m on my way to Uravan, Colorado, once again. This year marks 40 years since the town closed, and I’m grateful to continue being welcomed back by former residents for their annual reunion.

This photograph is from last year, when I collaborated with former residents to record oral histories and create wet plate collodion portraits as part of my ongoing project, Reconstructing Uravan. Pictured with me is Jane Thompson, President of the Rimrocker Historical Society and an important collaborator whose knowledge, generosity, and partnership continue to shape the work.

What began with portraits and oral histories is becoming the foundation for something much larger—an evolving project about memory, place, environmental history, and how the history of a town that no longer physically exists might be preserved, interpreted, and carried forward by the people who lived it.

There is much more still to research, build, and imagine. For now, I’m returning to listen, learn, and continue the work alongside this community. ♥️ by @abbeyhepner

I packed up an older series of mine (2012-2013) of framed Polaroid 669 photographs for the Maier Museum exhibition: American Solastalgia, opening later this month.

The photographs in Blue of Distance were created with expired Polaroid 669 film, purchased when Polaroid discontinued its instant analog film production in 2008. The film’s distinctive color shifts toward blue as its chemistry ages, echoing Rebecca Solnit’s description of blue as the color of distance—the atmospheric space between oneself and what can never fully be reached.

I made the images during my time at Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, California; Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colorado; on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi; and while living in Japan. These landscapes have become sites of personal nostalgia, photographed with a material that carries its own sense of loss. Polaroid film was formative to my early experience of photography, and its obsolescence gives the images a material nostalgia that parallels the emotional distance of the places they depict. The series considers how landscapes become repositories of desire, nostalgia, and ecological grief. It reflects on the changing environments we inherit and the emotional distances that emerge when familiar places are altered, rendered inaccessible, or lost.

——
“The world is blue at its edges and in its depths. This blue is the light that got lost. Light at the blue end of the spectrum does not travel the whole distance from the sun to us. It disperses among the molecules of the air, it scatters in water.... For many years, I have been moved by the blue at the far edge of what can be seen, that color of horizons, of remote mountain ranges, of anything far away. The color of that distance is the color of an emotion, the color of solitude and of desire, the color of there seen from here, the color of where you are not. And the color of where you can never go. For the blue is not in the place those miles away at the horizon, but in the atmospheric distance between you and the mountains.” -Rebecca Solnit, A Field Guide To Getting Lost
