I spent the last week in Paris, and before that, the last few months in Rochester working on a collaborative quilt making project with students in Intro to Fiber @urochester and 2nd year textiles students @ecoleartsdecoparis. Students at URochester naturally dyed cotton yardage that they and students at EnsAD then used to make quilt squares (in patchwork and appliqué) under the theme parcours de vie - connecting their own life journeys with the histories of quilts as cultural and familial artifacts. To realize this project, I was lucky to collaborate with my dear friend and former colleague @orsina.visconti and Cuture Director Tori Johnson at the FEU.

Thank you to the @fondationusa for making the project and the exhibition of this artwork possible! And thank you to @supima for the donation of materials. Most importantly, thank you to the wonderful students at both schools for engaging with the project and making exciting and ambitious work!

The final slide is back in Rochester this week, where after many of my woo-woo explanations of natural dye processes, a biochemistry major in the class was kind enough to make a presentation explaining exactly what was happening chemically as we mordanted and dyed our kilos of fabric… taken in Paris, France by @abbeymuza

I’m finally back in the studio after a summer of transition and travel, and sharing images of this piece from earlier this year while other things hum in the background.

I’m unpacking my studio in Rochester and pulled out the sample I made @haystack_school to photograph.

It’s a test that might become something else later, where i dye painted eight different images on two warps that weave together into these interrupted stripes on both sides of this double-sided textile, more abstraction that anything else. by @abbeymuza

In May, I wrote about Abbey Muza’s latest body of work for @sensusphilly issue 3.0. I have loved getting to know and work with Abbey during their time in Philadelphia—when I visited their studio last winter and saw these works in progress, I wanted to write about them immediately. Thank you for introducing us, @art_bumble 🩵 by @abbeymuza

I’m so happy (truly riding waves of joy) to have spent the last two weeks at @haystack_school for Open Studio Residency 2026. It was life changing in many ways. Working alongside my fellow residents and Haystack’s amazing staff meant working within a constant current of ideas, energy, joy, laughter, care, intention… I leave these two weeks with new lifelong friends and collaborators, but also with greater care for ideas about craft within my own work and communities, and with big hope to carry some of the communal energy we built together forward in my work and life. Thank you, Haystack, and till all of our meandering paths cross again!! ❤️❤️❤️ by @abbeymuza

Abbey Muza @abbeymuza

Muza makes weavings and drawings centered in narrative, archival and historical research, and abstraction. Their work references the historical use of symbol and narrative in order to respond to contemporary political and social realities, with content sourced from archival research, history, and literature, and collaged and abstracted into the drawn, dyed, and painted surfaces of their work.
