Thank you @hamzajahanzeb.co.uk for inviting me to join in a celebration of @hamed.amiri1989’s new children’s novel, The Other Boy, at the National Theatre this evening.

Hearing Hamed’s story tonight underlined for me more than ever how vital it is to provide a safe home for people fleeing danger, and to treat everyone who arrives here with respect, kindness and humanity.

I am ashamed of the news stories that have come from my home town of Portsmouth over the past couple of weeks. We are better than this and it’s up to us to live our values out loud.
