Preparation for pirouettes en dehors — working through as many preparation positions as possible.

The goal of this combination is to really feel the axial shift from two feet to one, whether you’re starting from first, fifth, fourth, or second position, and then to suspend each turn and finish it up on balance.

A good pirouette should finish in a controlled relevé balance. The landing is a separate action and should be approached separately rather than rushed into from the turn.

Baby Jayne at 12 years old dancing my first solo on pointe at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet — Twinkliana, choreographed by Sean Lavery.

I remember how exciting it was to be trusted with a solo for the first time, and how much confidence I gained from having something that was mine to work on and develop.

That is a big part of what I want dancers to experience during our Winter Variations Workshop at @adageballetacademy, December 26–30.

For five days, we’ll work individually with dancers on classical and contemporary repertoire. You can bring your own variations if you’re preparing for competition or audition season, or we can select repertoire for you and build a program around your individual needs.

It’s also a great way to keep dancing and stay in shape over the holiday break while having the time to really dig into solo work. Ballet is a performing art, and learning repertoire, developing interpretation, and becoming confident presenting yourself onstage are such important parts of training.

We’ll finish the workshop with an in-studio performance so everyone has the opportunity to present their work to a kind and supportive audience.

We also have limited housing available for dancers coming from outside the region, which makes this a really special opportunity if you don’t live nearby.

So… ask your parents for five days of ballet for Christmas. 😂🎄 I would love to work with you.

Rehearsing with two of our Primary Advanced dancers for our performance this Saturday at the FOX 53 Business Expo at The Mall at Robinson.

This duet, Reflections, choreographed by Guillaume, will be performed at 3:00 PM in the Rotunda. Come see us!! I'll be dancing too 🩷

This particular moment is tricky because the girls have to connect without pulling each other off balance. It requires control of the axis, stability through the standing side, and enough isolation in the port de bras to stay connected without creating tension through the rest of the body.

They’re doing a great job working through it and getting more comfortable with the mechanics each time.

I’m excited to share that I’m now opening my calendar for virtual private lessons. 🩰

One of the things I love most about teaching is being able to work with dancers individually—to really look at what they need, where they want to grow, and how we can make their training more thoughtful and specific.

Even from a distance, there is so much we can work on together: ballet technique, pointe work, conditioning and strengthening, variations, audition preparation, video review, and individual coaching tailored to your goals.

So whether you’re a former student, someone I’ve worked with at a workshop, or a dancer I haven’t had the chance to meet yet, I’d be very happy to work with you virtually.

Meet Abby Jayne DeAngelo — Founder & Artistic Director of Adage Ballet Academy. 🩰

“Ballet has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

From my early training at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, to the Professional Division at Pacific Northwest Ballet, to dancing professionally with PNB, the studio has always been where I learned who I was — as an artist, a student, and eventually, a teacher.

Over time, performing became teaching. Teaching became coaching, mentorship, and artistic leadership.

In 2021, I founded Adage Ballet Academy with the belief that dancers deserve training that is rigorous, thoughtful, and deeply human — training that develops not only technique, but understanding, confidence, artistry, and longevity.

Today, I’m proud to lead Adage into its next chapter at Lucymont, while continuing to perform and work as a freelance artist within the professional dance community.
