One year ago, I was celebrating my 50th birthday. I just finished radiation. Chemo was only a month or so behind me. I was weak and slow and tired and stiff. But I needed to get out of cancerland and into the world. So my amazing oncology team gave me a prescription for a breakthrough treatment called Italy. For a few weeks, I pretend the world was all joy and scrumptious pasta and creamy cappuccinos and crisp white Italian wine and books you can’t put down and breathtaking architecture and laughs about perimenopause vibes and talks about all the bright and dark and beautiful and terrible things in life. Swallowing a daily pill of Italian sun and fresh squeezed orange juice healed me. Now I am just a few minutes away from turning 51. And for the rest of my life I will always say that the best birthday gift is to get older (and to spend more time in Italy) 🇮🇹 taken in Italy by @abbyyoungvt

Technically it is still summer, so it’s not too late to share summer highlights. Having hair was definitely a highlight.

Astrid turned 21 and promptly became a bartender. As an added birthday gift, she was accepted into Georgetown Law School for the fall of 2027!

Eli went to the World Cup in Boston - Scotland vs Morocco.
