Before ABC had a name, it had moments like this.

He walked out of prison during COVID when the world suddenly understood confinement.
The difference? He had already served all his time.

In 2022, he was exonerated for a murder he didn’t commit.

Today he spends his days showing up to events, to the community, and to the phone when someone coming home has no one else to call.

He doesn’t just believe in second chances. He helps make them possible.

42 years.

For a crime he didn’t commit.

Jimmy Soto and his cousin David Ayala are the longest serving wrongfully incarcerated persons in Illinois history.

But Jimmy refused to let those years define him.

Inside prison, he became a jailhouse lawyer relentlessly studying the law while helping others pursue their freedom. While incarcerated, he also earned his bachelors degree from Northwestern University.

Jimmy didn’t just endure those 42 years.
He turned them into purpose.

Today, he continues that fight as a co-founder of ABC Reentry, an organization built from lived experience and the belief that no one should have to navigate coming home alone.

Because Jimmy has never believed in leaving anyone behind.

Now he’s headed to law school to keep doing what he has always done, fight for justice and stand beside the people the system tried to forget.

His tenacity, brilliance, and unwavering commitment to justice are extraordinary.

After 42 years of fighting for his own freedom, Jimmy is still fighting so others don’t have to fight alone.

Wrongful Conviction Day is about more than recognizing injustice. It’s about listening to the people who lived it and learning from what they chose to build afterward.

Today, we’re proud to amplify the voices of ABC Reentry’s co-founders and their vision for making the road home better for those who come next.

Their experiences shaped this work. Their resilience drives it. Their commitment to giving back is what ABC Reentry is all about. 🖤

Today, we celebrate them — and we keep doing the work.

Today, on Wrongful Conviction Day, we celebrate the resilience of the ABC Reentry’s co-founders, Robert Almodovar, Roosevelt Myles and Jimmy Soto who served a combined 92 years wrongly convicted.

Their experiences brought them together & their determination built a devoted community. Every day their work helps create a clearer path forward for those coming home.

This was today’s sunrise. An experience Jimmy got to savor. Something he missed after 42 years incarcerated.

For over two decades, Ashley Cohen has dedicated her career to helping those wrongfully convicted — a passion that started back in 2007 as a college freshman. Through her post conviction advocacy, she helped secure over 20 exonerations or early releases. But along the way, she saw a gap: little support existed for people coming home after incarceration. That’s why she founded ABC Reentry. These exonerees and returning citizens aren’t just clients to her — they’re family, they’re community, and their success is personal. 💛 #WrongfulConviction #Reentry #secondchances #justicereform @LegallyABC taken in Chicago, Illinois by @abcreentry

CARPLS had an amazing time at Wrongful Conviction Day with our partners at ABC Reentry! We held a Power of Attorney clinic with CARPLS staff and some volunteers from Depaul University College of Law, helping clients secure their future.

We’re grateful for opportunities like these to support organizations that empower individuals and advocate for second chances. by @abcreentry

In recognition of Wrongful Conviction Day this week, we’re sharing the opening two minutes of Post Conviction.

The film opens with a pattern. Many of the men you see here are still incarcerated, still fighting their cases, and still waiting to be heard.

Their stories reveal allegations of abuse connected to retired Chicago police Lt. Anthony Wojcik, whose name appears across multiple cases spanning years.

One day. One place. A one-stop shop for reentry resources.

On October 2, ABC Reentry is bringing together an incredible group of organizations, service providers, advocates and community supporters for our inaugural Wrongful Conviction Day Resource Fair & Celebration in Chicago.

Our goal is simple: bring the resources to the people who need them.

Legal assistance. Housing. Employment and workforce training. Mental health and trauma support. Healthcare. Financial literacy. Entrepreneurship. Reentry navigation. Community. Connection.

All in one place.

We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve received and for every organization that has stepped forward to provide resources, participate, sponsor, volunteer, collaborate, or simply believe in what we’re building.

Now, we need your help to make it happen.

We are still actively raising funds to cover the costs of bringing this day together and to ensure that returning citizens and their families can participate free of charge.

Every donation matters. Whether it’s $25, $100, $500 or more, your support helps us create a day where people coming home can access meaningful resources, build relationships and connect with a community ready to support what comes next.

If you can’t be with us in Chicago, you can still be part of what we’re building.

We’re excited to share that Post Conviction is an Official Selection of the 2026 San Quentin Film Festival, the first film festival to take place inside a prison.

And it goes beyond San Quentin. Through the festival’s partnership with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, we’ll have the opportunity to make Post Conviction available to people incarcerated in every California state prison.

After five years making this film together, it means a lot to us that people who know this fight firsthand will have the chance to see it.
