The African Book Festival has formed a book clubā£ļø

Our goal is to read at least one book from each and every country on the African continent, starting in Cameroon.

Our next in-person meeting @onemorechapterberlin
šŸ“Sat. 31st October, 3pm

If you want to join, send us a message please.
Our October read is "How beautiful we were" by Imbolo Mbue:

A fearless young woman from a small African village starts a revolution against an American oil company in this sweeping, inspiring novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Behold the Dreamers.

We should have known the end was near. So begins Imbolo Mbue’s powerful second novel.

Set in the fictional African village of Kosawa, it tells of a people living in fear amid environmental degradation.

How Beautiful We Were is a masterful exploration of what happens when the reckless drive for profit, coupled with the ghost of colonialism, comes up against one community’s determination to hold on to its ancestral land and a young woman’s willingness to sacrifice everything for the sake of her people’s freedom.

Let's enjoy some impressions of "Men under Pressure Part II" which happened last weekend @moaberlin

First the good news: all panelists behaved (see last picture for proof of bromance) and our audience got inspired with so many more thoughts and ideas.

Now the bad news: the conversation is not over. This fantastic, interesting conversation made it
very clear: we must speak about especially young men, male violence, accountability and a future where role models are more difficult to find.

Thanks a lot to @bisialimi @jj_bola @_faanil for joining us again and for the work you all do. Thank you for the books as well.
Thank you to @celiaparbey for moderating.

Celia Parbey is up for a challenge. She took on the task of moderating tomorrow's "Men Under Pressure" panel, a conversation about masculinity.

In May, our guests @jj_bola @_faanil @bisialimi already started to look at modern men, patriarchy and female expectations. They failed to agree and forgot to hold men accountable for their actions.

Now, the conversation continues with a female feminist lead @celiaparbey.
Celia is a true Berliner, an editor and an African studies scholar. In her writing she focuses primarily on the topics of intersectionality, feminism and racism. She is also editor-in-chief of ā€œRosaMagā€ @rosa_mag , an online lifestyle magazine for Black women in German-speaking countries.

Expect deep insights, and a packed house. You won’t want to miss this!

When @bisialimi is part of the African Book Festival, one thing is guaranteed: It’s ALWAYS packed and NEVER boring!

Bisi Alimi is a human rights activist, film producer, and trained actor and whenever he speaks, people turn up. Known worldwide as a bold LGBTQIA+ rights advocate and role model, Bisi has never shied away from standing up for truth.

Back in 2004, when then-President Olusegun Obasanjo claimed that homosexuality did not exist in Nigeria, Bisi seized the moment and declared live on television that the President was wrong. That courageous act changed everything, costing him his home and nearly his life – but it also marked him as one of the most vital voices of our time.

And because Bisi still does not shy away from controversy, this year, for the first time, the African Book Festival is being extended on October 2nd!

Recently, taking a radical feminist stance, Bisi sparked intense debate by claiming that cis men fundamentally benefit from patriarchy and can therefore never truly share the lived reality and oppression experienced by women.

Expect raw conversation, deep insights, and a packed house. You won’t want to miss this!

Men Under Pressure - The Conversation Continues

At this year’s African Book Festival Berlin Bisi Alimi was in conversation with @jj_bola and @_faanil on men’s power, privilege and accountability. The room was packed and emotions ran high on stage and in the audience. Obviously, there was a need to extend the conversation.

The guys need to talk and we say: Let them!

Join us to discuss various visions of redefining masculinity @moaberlin on 2. October. Moderated by @celiaparbey

Info & tickets via event link in Bio.

CAN MEN BE FEMINISTS?

Bisi Alimi is a human rights activist and film producer. A trained actor, he is a popular public speaker as a gay rights activist. For many, he is also a role model.
When the then President Olusegun Obasanjo claimed in 2004 that homosexuality did not exist in Nigeria, Bisi Alimi seized the opportunity and told the nation, live on television, that Obasanjo was wrong. This courageous move cost him his home and nearly his life.

The African Book Festival is being extended on 2nd October.
Why?
Because even today, Bisi Alimi still does not shy away from controversy. Taking a radical feminist stance, he claimed that cis men fundamentally benefit from patriarchy and therefore could never truly share the lived reality and oppression experienced by women.

The conversation continues.

Why wait for ABF 2027? @jj_bola and @nadou_kuss have a couple of good reasons for you!

BUT we also have two African Book Festival Events for you to tie you over:

JJ Bola, @_faanil and @bisialimi will continue their conversation on masculinity, power & responsibility on 2. October hosted by @celiaparbey .

And Edwige-Renée Dro, @tendaihuchu, @niq.mhlongo and @stefhirs just cannot stop fighting about the books they read and love, so let’s indulge them and enjoy some playful banter at the winter edition of our Literary Quartet.

Both events take place in partnership with and at @moaberlin . MOA than a book club.

šŸ“š What would a literature festival be without its Festival Bookshop?

More than just a book table, it's where readers discover new voices, meet the authors they've just seen on stage, and leave with stories that stay with them long after the festival ends.

Since 2019, our festival bookshop has been lovingly curated by @ikontinental. Year after year, @marya.israel (and in previous editions together with @lotte_wien) together with passionated volunteers has helped create a space that reflects the richness and diversity of African literature.
We are deeply grateful for their unwavering support over the years. Thank you for helping us put the right books into the right hands, and for being such an essential part of the African Book Festival community.

Here's to many more years of celebrating books together. ā¤ļø
