What if the person you most need to talk to is a complete stranger hiding in the bathroom with you? 👀

“EVEN THOUGH I ATE THE CAKE” by Liese Kuhn (South Africa 🇿🇦), follows 34-year-old Maya as she attends the bachelorette party of an old university friend. Engaged herself, surrounded by people she barely knows and increasingly overwhelmed by the celebrations, she escapes to the bathroom for a moment alone...

Funny, surreal and heartfelt, “Even Though I Ate The Cake” is a story about female friendship, societal expectations, vulnerability and the unexpected freedom of finally saying what you really think. 🥂

Liese Kuhn is a South African writer and director who graduated from AFDA Cape Town. She was selected for the “NFVF Female Filmmakers Program”, Durban Talents in cooperation with Berlinale Talents, DFM Access and the Durban FilmMart Alumni Business Lab. Across her work, Kuhn is committed to creating space for greater representation while telling stories with curiosity, humour and humanity.

Excited! I definitely want to be like @aigonibarrett who not only somehow convinced people to call him "best YOUNG writer" until the end of time but also is crazy enough to turn Kafka - our holy Kafka - into the most likeable Black ass and Whyte face ever.
What started as a satire in Lagos continues as a tour de force in Amsterdam. Love it. Read it. Buy it!

in the bright of life’s calluses, softness is a knife’s edge, no glamour, but find me in the doldrums singing ripe and jagged hymns.

Swipe - these videos portray a performance of ‘Sound Of Sleep’ taken from my EP WINTERSKIN released upon arrival to Berlin by @lekkercollective. The show was hosted by @tendermeshh, and I was accompanied by gorgeous keys from @wolllleeeeee. The second video is my performance at @abfberlin, as I read from a new collection of poetry that I find myself writing. Lastly, the final video is from a beautiful performance with @komidashi at @sheffmuseums in the UK last month, beautiful vibes alongside @yume_net

More new music and poetic workings very soon.

Black Germany does not need to build a carnival. It needs to ask, with full seriousness and full honesty, what it will build that is irreducibly its own. Read the full article here - https://open.substack.com/pub/yourafrikanneighbour/p/what-black-germany-must-find-within?r=86qnyx&utm_medium=ios
