Padma A female who emerged amidst the territories of two dominant females—Jivda of Sena and Fenella of Bisalpur. Sired by Fenella, she is part of one of her mother’s most successful litters. Since 2023, she has been steadily carving out a territory of her own, initially around her mother’s range before gradually encroaching into Jivda’s territory. What makes Jawai special, beyond the dramatic landscape in which its leopards thrive, is the remarkable peaceful coexistence between wildlife and people. It’s a story that has been spoken about extensively in recent years, particularly with the region’s surge in tourism. Yet, remarkably, the essence of Jawai still remains unchanged. World Photography Day The camera gave me much more than an image. It brought me closer to destinations that once seemed to exist at the borders of dreams, and to experiences that remain mine, undiluted, uncompromised. Photography isn’t easy. Luck doesn’t always find you. And even when it does, the image doesn’t always turn out the way you imagined. The Cave of Dreams! I first encountered leopards here seven years ago, when Jawai was still known to only a handful of people. I remember witnessing Jivda mating with the Rabari male, an individual who was later killed and displaced by 6B, the current dominant male of the region. What makes 6B particularly fascinating is the territory he has fiercely defended ever since. He has fought at least four males in battles that were nearly fatal, establishing himself as one of the most dominant leopards the Jawai landscape has seen in a very long time. His reign has lasted for years, a testament to his strength and resilience. Years later, I was fortunate enough to find myself back at the same cave, this time with Jivda and her present litter. There was something incredibly special about seeing her cubs in the very cave that has witnessed so much of her story.
