𓂅 Fieldnotes // one month of thinking about witches 𓂅

Part archival research, part personal diary, this essay-performance dug into the archive of Maltese Processi Criminali. It unfolds the records of women accused of witchcraft in 1602, bringing them in parallel with lived experiences of contemporary womanhood.

Constructed through a series of looped vocalisations, chanted prayers and bird whistles, I wanted to accompany the work with an invisible choir of women, attempting to revive the voices of those whose agency and narratives have been lost in the sands of time.

It was really a pleasure to dig into and share this work, in the Tribunal Room at the Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu, where these trials took place. It was also a performance for the ghosts.

Continuing to search for how to hold and make space for complicated, multi-layered and kaleidoscopic narratives 🫂

The work was part of Moving with the Wind, Like Waves, a project beautifully curated by @elysetonna and commissioned by the @bovbankofvalletta Foundation.

Thanks Niels for the sonic and AV support and fantastic light setup. Couldn’t have done it without you 🙏

Thanks to @elisa_von_bee for the lovely photos!
And thanks to @zowij for the great nails and conversations 𓂅 by @abiagius

⊙ In October last year, @zowij+ @abiagius took the circle into the Malta archeology museum. The circular space became our archeological site, and we the artefacts inhabiting it. Drawn by the miniature neolithic, embracing couple, sculpture housed at the museum, we sifted through layers of sediment and time to unfold how the softness of embrace transforms into the tensions of push and vice-versa.

This project had us building sets in car parks at 6am, entering and inhabiting the museum for days and transforming it into a playground for speculative exploration.

Variations on Dusk was commissioned for @nottebiancavlt 2025.

𓇳 A dancer navigates the periphery of a circle, working through systemised patterns of walking and reversing, back and forth. Created with and for dusk, Għabex researches the relationship between body and planetary time, wondering about the ways in which time speeds up and slows down.

The beautiful music accompanying the piece (first clip) was composed by Chris Galea. Niels Plotard danced the work, and also created the beautiful light design to accompany it (you can see it warming up in clip 2).

Together with @zowij, we shared Għabex at @dancefestivalmalta, following a residency kindly supported by @zfinmalta 𓇳 by @abiagius

𓇳 from roof to car park, in 2025 @zowij and myself spent five months drawing circles across the island. we were researching liminal time, hoping to catch the suspended moment between sunset and night.

the circle became a choreographic space in which we could navigate cyclical patterns, wondering about time as it speeds up and slows down.

this curiosity led to our creations for @dancefestivalmalta [għabex, danced by the beautiful Niels Plotard] and eventually @nottebiancavlt [variations on dusk], kindly supported by a residency at @zfinmalta 𓇳 by @abiagius

A collection of images from Scores for Fleeting Sunlight, our AiR at ŻfinMalta last September, researching the sun as it moved.

I keep reflecting on this curiosity about time and the way it is traced through our skies. Months later, I am craving for a bodily relationship with time, one in which time is perceived through a sensorial relationship to the world — moving through sunrises, sunsets and seasons with a sense of innate trust and knowing.

We were mark-making as this time passed us by, perhaps in an effort to record and recall what was, and to hold onto it a little bit longer. In our last improvisations, we stopped recording clock time on the marks and were guessing it - abiding by the felt perception of this time as it sped up or slowed down through the body.

It was such a pleasure to share in this with @_rachelcalleja, @martinageorginatekla and @zowij who each brought such beautiful and unique perspectives, with warmth, light, curiosity and sensitivity to the process. Thank you!

And thank you to @zfinmalta for their support, trust and encouragement - and for sharing their studios with us, whose iconic patches of light inspired this research in the first place.

There is a lot more to share about this project, and I am looking to continue nourishing its evolution. If you are curious, do reach out 🔆

Photos are mostly by @leochircop who looks through the lens with sensitive and magic eyes. Last photo by @emmawalkies who was also a gem at capturing the magic! taken in ŻfinMalta by @abiagius

These ants came out after sunset for their night shift.

@nielsplotard was editing the video (which he also shot 👁) and I was mentioning a tracking effect I see dancers applying on Instagram, which makes it look like the camera is moving in response to their movement. It was interesting to use this tracking on the ant, which in turn reflects and reveals its own movement quality. (1)

(2) illustrations from MYRMECOFAUNA OF THE MALTESE ISLANDS. There are 50+ species of ants in Malta

(3) ant trails and tracking pathways/ an ant-set score

(4) body pathways shaped by ants. more and more ants appeared as time passed and it was becoming a complex game, both make space and to not touch them as I also fear them

(5) more from (2) creatures with histories and journeys, travelling across lands and settling new lands

These branches, 300m up the volcano, are the burnt remains of a flame which set the island of Stromboli ablaze in 2022. This fire was not caused by the volcano itself: it started on a film set.

It is curious, somehow: the ability to stand on top of a belly of fire but be the one who sets the skin ablaze.

New vegetation has grown, but imprints, traces, and bodily memories of the event remain. I wonder how I connect with these branches, lean on them and find support. What can I learn from these branches?

When I was drawing, I was then thinking about the container of the body… the shape of the space inside and outside of it… and all of the tangles in-between. What is this human body… what is this volcano body… etc etc. ▫️◻️◽️⬜️

This research was a part of A Process of Making with @marosistromboli. The images are stills captured from video documentation by Niels Plotard, back in April 2024. by @abiagius
