Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations 🫂 Smiling through the pain turns struggles of survival into stories of revival. If you know a little bit about me, you know I lost my dad almost three years ago. It feels unreal to say that much time has gone by because although I got through the darkest of days, sometimes it still feels like it just happened while other days I come to the realization of how much healing I have experienced. Nothing mends a broken heart, you simply learn how to navigate life around the void and it’s a gentle reminder that life is short so make it sweet. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” ~ Robert Frost ✨ This quote speaks to the beauty of choosing your own path. There’s something incredibly grounding about stepping off the beaten path, immersing yourself in nature, and embracing the challenges that come with all that this human experience is. Living your most authentic life isn’t just about the pursuit; it’s about the stillness, the focus, and love for this land created for you, that surrounds you. Stepping out of your comfort zone and into the unknown, the uncertain, is where you find clarity, strength, and connection — both with the wild and within yourself. The road less traveled often takes you to places of breathtaking beauty, both outside and within. That’s where the magic happens. Take the road less traveled — it’s worth it every time. Everything I am going through is bittersweet, I am feeling all the damn feels but I know a life changing chapter awaits. I also know deep in my heart that my father’s death wasn’t in vain. He was far from perfect but what he left behind is more than a daughter could ever dream of. My life is on a path to feeling much more fulfilling and I owe a lot of it to him. My kind of American Dream… the dream of making ends meet by passionately and wholeheartedly doing what I love, doing things that brings ease, joy and genuine fulfillment to my body, heart, mind and soul while traveling the world, witnessing the mind blowing goodness our creator created for us to gracefully embrace 🇺🇸 I have met… Successful people? Yes. Productive people? Plenty. Anxious, Afraid, Apologetic people? Heaps of them. But relaxed people? At-ease people? Authentic & humble af people? Down to earth people that aren’t taking life so seriously? People who don’t dissect their days into half hour slots of productivity? People who prioritize rest and pleasure and play? People who aren’t afraid to take up space in the world? People who give themselves unconditional permission to relax? Without guilt? Without apology? Without feeling like they need to earn it? I haven’t met many people like that. But I sure as hell am becoming one. Leading and living a life I don’t need a vacation from. B L I S S • behind every beautiful thing there’s some kind of pain 🖤 Are you a passive observer or an active participant in the creation of your reality? Are you doing everything in your human experience to be authentically… h a p p y? Healing is just a series of doing things you don’t want to do… Feeling when you want to numb. Communicating when you want to be silent. Setting boundaries when you just want to sweep it under the rug. Putting yourself out there when you want to isolate. Connecting to your body instead of dissociating. Acknowledging how all the ways you learned to protect yourself actually just kept you from your life. The world is loud and in a hurry because ego is in the lead. Learning to cultivate a quiet, relaxed posture in the midst of the world’s madness is the pathway into peace. Ego pushes with a loud sense of urgency. Wisdom leads with a soft sense of peace. And well, if all of us were brave enough to share the full, messy range of our human experience, no matter the story, no one would ever feel lonely again. The universe is a mirror, reflecting back to us our deepest beliefs, thoughts, & intentions. Remember friends, what we seek, we shall find and at the top of that list should be, finding yourself. It is not your physical appearance or status that makes you magnetic. What makes you unforgettable is how you change people’s hearts with your presence. That is your power house. Some of the most meaningful moments in teaching are the ones that don’t need words — or even a visible response. 🪷 Today, I played a read-aloud of The Very Hungry Caterpillar for one of my students. He may not be able to move independently or respond in the ways we’re accustomed to seeing, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t listening, feeling, or experiencing the world around him. The sound of a voice. The rhythm of a story. Music. Storytelling. 🎶📖 They offer stimulation, comfort, connection, and another beautiful way to reach a child’s heart and mind. Because education isn’t always about pencils, educational worksheets, getting an answer back or test scores. Sometimes, it’s simply about creating moments of connection and trusting that somewhere within the quiet… they hear us. Love note 💌 Maybe this is your gentle reminder that you don’t have to be creating, producing, achieving, or checking things off a list every single day. And yes, this is especially for the creatives — but honestly, it’s for all of us. Humanity as a collective. We live in a culture that taught us to hustle, at least I grew up in that world. To keep going. To always be doing something. Somewhere along the way, we started believing that slowing down meant we weren’t doing enough. But we are human beings, not machines. Sometimes taking care of your mental health means stepping away from the canvas. Closing the laptop. Putting down the camera. Saying no. Sleeping in. Sitting quietly. Going outside. Watching sunrises and sunsets. Eating pizza by the ocean. OR doing absolutely nothing without feeling guilty about it. Life really does move quickly. The days can feel long, and somehow the years feel incredibly short. But that doesn’t mean we have to rush through every moment trying to squeeze everything out of life. We cannot pour abundantly and endlessly from an empty cup. And sometimes, we even forget that we deserve to refill our own. Mental health and wellness shouldn’t belong to one awareness month, one week, or one conversation. It deserves space year-round — just like our physical health, our creativity, our relationships, our passions, and every other part of what makes us human. So breathe. Take deep breaths throughout the day. Close your eyes. Sit in your car listening to music. Rest. Recharge. Come back to yourself. You do not have to earn rest by burning yourself out first. On September 21, 2004 at 9:29pm my girl made a grand entrance into this world 🖤 And just like that, she turns turns 22. Although my life had already begun changing while carrying you, nothing could have prepared me for how deeply becoming your mother would change me. One of the greatest gifts of motherhood and becoming a parent isn’t simply having a child. It’s getting to witness them grow into who they are meant to be. As parents, we sometimes forget that our children aren’t ours to own. They are ours to love, guide, protect, and walk beside until they find their own way. I’ve witnessed so many milestones… elementary school, middle school, high school, going off to college, becoming an educator, getting your own apartment, adopting a dog, traveling, taking on adulthood, and building a life that belongs to you. And one that feels good to you. Watching you become your own person has been one of the greatest blessings & privileges of my life. But perhaps the most beautiful part has been growing up alongside you. I was 22 when I gave life to you. And now, here you are — 22. It’s such a nostalgic, full-circle moment to realize that 22 years ago, I was you. You have taught me things no one else could have. You’ve opened my eyes and my heart to different ways of seeing life and made me a better mother, a better woman, and simply a better human. And I’ll never forget the day you saw me crying, afraid to chase my dreams, and said, “Mom, if not now, then when?” Those words lit a fire in me. Because of YOU, I stopped letting fear and other people’s opinions become louder than the dreams God placed in my heart. So today, I don’t just celebrate my daughter. I celebrate one of my greatest teachers, blessings, and the person who helped shape the woman I became. Happy 22nd birthday, Melanie. 🌞👑 My ray of sunshine, my first baby, my forever little girl. 56 years… a love note to my parents 💌 Feliz aniversario a mis hermosos padres 🖤💍 Aunque mi papá ya no esté aquí físicamente para celebrar este día, hay fechas y amores que celebramos por el resto de nuestras vidas, mientras estemos aquí en la Tierra. Como dos seres humanos, tuvieron sus desafíos, diferencias y momentos difíciles, pero también se amaron profundamente, y eso es lo que permanece. ❤️‍🩹 Me gusta pensar que mi papá también está celebrando hoy desde el cielo. 🕊️ La vida nos lanza situaciones para las que jamás estamos preparados, pero mi paz está en confiar en que Dios sabía lo que estaba haciendo. Late summer baseball. 🌞⚾️🏝️ One more tournament, one more weekend on the diamond, one more chapter before the season turns. This Labor Day weekend, my son and his team DC Bananas 🍌 took the field at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, Florida. Weather shook things up and they couldn’t finalize all the games, but they were at the top 🏆 Anyway, there’s something pretty special about photographing baseball in a place so deeply connected to the history of the game and to the values Jackie Robinson stood for — integrity, perseverance, courage, discipline, and teamwork. Now we turn the page to fall ball. Aka cozy season. 🍂 And honestly… how can you not romanticize baseball? The cleats. The dirt. The dugouts. The early mornings. The long drives. The dugout chatter. The competition. The brotherhood. The community. The cheering. The smell of baseball. The feeling of stepping onto a field and knowing you have a job to do. I love photographing these boys at this stage of the game, high school baseball, where they’re still young enough to be kids but wise enough to understand what they’re working toward. I may not be lucky enough to photograph major league level, but I beyond blessed and immensely grateful that I get to photograph some pretty incredible athletes who are chasing that dream. And who knows? — Maybe someday, one of these boys will step onto a professional field, and I’ll have photographs from long before the big stadiums, the big contracts, and the bright lights — back when they were high school baseball players, playing the game they loved. That’s a pretty dope thing to be able to say. Cheers to fall baseball. New season. New goals. Same game. Same passion. Maybe somewhere in these photographs, there’s a future ballplayer who hasn’t even realized yet how far this game will take him. Once upon a time, she did. She let other people’s words become ceilings over places she was meant to soar. She listened to the voices that sounded like concern, like wisdom, like protection… even when they were quietly teaching her to dream smaller. But somewhere along the way, she learned to unlearn. And then… to learn again. She outgrew the version of herself that needed permission to reach higher. She gracefully grew through the lessons, the disappointments, the doubt, and even the voices of those she loved most. Because sometimes no one will ever say, “Don’t fly.” Sometimes it sounds like, “Be realistic.” “Maybe that’s too much.” “Are you sure you can handle that?” “I just don’t want you to get hurt.” “Maybe you should stay where you’re comfortable.” And sometimes those words come from the people closest to us. Sometimes they come from strangers. Sometimes they even come from the voice inside our own heads that was shaped by everything we’ve ever been told. But here is what she finally understood: No human being was given the authority to decide the height of another human being’s flight. Not even the people who love us. Not even the people who know us best. Not even the people who mean well. Because love should never require us to become smaller. And if the Most High did not place a ceiling over the purpose, potential, dreams, and becoming of a human soul… who are we to accept one from anyone else? So fly. Unlearn what made you afraid. Relearn what makes you believe. Outgrow every room that requires you to shrink to belong. And whatever you do, don’t confuse someone else’s limitations with your own. The sky was never the limit. The best chances for success comes when we are aligned with our authentic truth. Not our parents, not societies, not our partners, not our kids but our own individual truth. Whatever that looks like — bask in it 🖤 God will give you the desires of your heart in divine time. He hears you. You just have to be patient and trust. Being a parent for 19 years has taught me that.. “When you give up your happiness for your children, the burden they end up having to carry is the knowledge that your sadness is their fault..” @vanessacornell Becoming a parent does NOT mean pushing your dreams and hearts desires to the side. Who made up the ‘rule’ that being a parent, living authentically and following your hearts desires can’t co-exist? Who said it’s selfish to make yourself ultimately happy? What’s the point of being human? My kids have been such a driving force for me to become all that I am meant to be. For too many years, I laid low, thought I was wrong for wanting and needing more just because I was an adult, a mom — boy was I wrong. Your children watching you follow your calling, your passions and making it all a living reality shows them that they too can live up to their dreams. Not your dreams. Not the worlds. Theirs. Grateful for the experiences and spiritual journey that has lead me where I am. The physical realm is just a little puzzle piece of our human experience.
