TITLE CARDS FROM EPISODE 1 of THE FUTURE: BEYOND YOUTUBE SERIES. Our series piloted last week that follows the journey of creating my feature film debut. An Afro futuristic world based in future dystopian South Africa. Building the world and the aesthetic of the design has been one of the most interesting learning aspects for me. I feel as a filmmaker, my visual eye, and my narrative storytelling through editing are what I consider my strengths, but this has given me the opportunity to learn and grow my graphic design skills in a way that I’m enjoying more than I thought I would. There’s a very specific kind of RED that appears in all of my projects in this world that I feel is articulated in the fonts and colour. I had fun! Episode two is going to be an exciting one. South Africa has already proved it can build science-fiction worlds. The harder question is who gets to imagine them. In Abongwe L. Booi’s The Last Insurgent, the country reaches 2042 under a totalitarian government increasingly shaped by foreign technology corporations. Ntobeko Sishi plays Lethu Mashatile, an insurgent who wakes wounded on a battlefield surrounded by the bodies of his comrades. The immediate question is whether he survives. The larger one is about power. Who controls technological progress? Who makes decisions about a country’s future? And what happens when the people living with those decisions no longer believe they have any power over them? Booi’s ambition extends beyond the film itself. South African crews have helped build major science-fiction productions before. He wants African filmmakers to have the creative and financial power to author those futures too. The Last Insurgent is now being positioned for international festival circulation, with Booi hoping its world can eventually expand into a feature. The future he imagines is frightening. This visual was birthed from the deepest depths of artistic fatigue. It’s 1am, I had just come off a 12 hour commercial shoot. It’s 1am, Zoë had just come off stage in full glam. 1am and this is the only time in the next few months we can make anything happen. No light rigs no crew just in the middle of the road and a car. It’s 1am. The result is something really raw and honest and beautiful with the performance that I think Zoe has really poured herself out into. We shot this video on my final day of living LA. Los Angeles is a city where it’s incredibly easy to get caught in a downward tailspin of the things we think we want. In the end it’s the small things: community, faith, friends, hobbies, and the small joys like sitting under a tree that matter the most. Could not pulled this off without all the help of our friends.
