Tii'sC's - Film

What does the future of South Africa look like when the people lose control of their own destiny?

South African writer, director and producer Abongwe L. Booi explores that question in The Last Insurgent, an upcoming sci-fi short set in a dystopian South Africa in 2042.

Starring Ntobeko Sishi and Alex Biaya, the film follows a young rebel fighting for survival in a world shaped by corporate control, exploitation and political oppression.

@abobooi has spent years building worlds through music videos, developing his language as a filmmaker through longstanding creative partnerships with artists @willlinleyy, @officialmanana, and @sishiiofficial - bringing their sonic stories to life on screen.

Now, he’s using that language to tell his own story. “The Last Insurgent,” Booi’s science fiction short film, serves as an introduction to a larger feature that focusses on loss, disenfranchisement, and the uncertainty of our future.

TITLE CARDS FROM EPISODE 1 of THE FUTURE: BEYOND YOUTUBE SERIES.
Our series piloted last week that follows the journey of creating my feature film debut. An Afro futuristic world based in future dystopian South Africa.

Building the world and the aesthetic of the design has been one of the most interesting learning aspects for me. I feel as a filmmaker, my visual eye, and my narrative storytelling through editing are what I consider my strengths, but this has given me the opportunity to learn and grow my graphic design skills in a way that I’m enjoying more than I thought I would.

There’s a very specific kind of RED that appears in all of my projects in this world that I feel is articulated in the fonts and colour. I had fun!

Episode two is going to be an exciting one. You might see your favorite actor in it?👀 guess who? by @artisticintent

This visual was birthed from the deepest depths of artistic fatigue. It’s 1am, I had just come off a 12 hour commercial shoot. It’s 1am, Zoë had just come off stage in full glam. 1am and this is the only time in the next few months we can make anything happen. No light rigs no crew just in the middle of the road and a car. It’s 1am.

The result is something really raw and honest and beautiful with the performance that I think Zoe has really poured herself out into. I’m inspired by the world builders around me who relentlessly actualize the imagination. Miss Modiga. You are a force.
