Renovating a home is maybe not the best idea for someone who hates surprises. No matter what age your home is, you never truly know what’s going on underneath all the drywall. Sometimes that means you have to roll with the punches and embrace the quirks. Other times it means spending a lot more than you initially intended (often on things you will never actually see).

What does matter is this: having a cohesive vision to come back to when surprises pop up. Being able to pivot, but not throw off the entire project. That vision matters more than you think, and having a designer to lead the way will be an invaluable asset to making sure your vision stays intact, no matter what gets thrown your way. And luckily for you if you’re thinking about embarking on a renovation, I love surprises (or at least, I love to handle them for you) ☺️

I’m not sure I’ve ever formally introduced myself on here, so since we’re all friends I figure it’s time I do!

I’m Melina! I grew up and went to school in the Midwest (Hoosier❤️🤍) and I have always been drawn to beautiful things. I studied journalism, but after graduating knew it wasn’t what I was passionate about.

I have been in the interior design world for almost 10 years, often working behind the scenes where I have learned the ins and outs and nittiest gritties of this business. I found myself loving (and being very good at) the thousands of logistic details involved in design that you don’t see - procurement, project management, business financials, and everything in between.

While working full-time in Orange County, CA for a design firm (and between planning a wedding) I decided to go back to school for interior design. It was a hard and busy time, but I loved every day of it.

When my husband and I decided we wanted to move back to the Midwest with our sweet Minnie, we wanted to move somewhere we could build a solid foundation for my interior design business and where we could be closer to family but still enjoy and appreciate nature’s beauty and build a community. That landed us right here in Traverse City!

A few fast facts: I love travel and exploring new places and cities. I love spending time outdoors and photographing landscapes; Our world is SO beautiful and special! I care deeply about fairness and equality for every single human - I don’t care about your background, situation, or where you come from. I adore cats (some may call me a crazy cat lady) and my sweet, beautiful Minnie has a place in my heart forever. I’m so grateful for every connection, friend, employer, coworker and everyone in between - interior design is founded upon the relationships we build with each other and that shapes how we build our homes.

If you’re thinking about building the foundation of your home, whether that means renovating an existing home, furnishing existing rooms, or starting from scratch, I would love to help you get there! taken in Downtown Traverse City by @abodenstudio

Designing and building a home takes so much more than choosing tile and lighting. It’s hundreds of decisions, endless coordination, and details that make or break the final result. That’s where we come in - to manage the process, simplify your choices, and make sure your home feels intentional from the ground up. No project is too small so if you’re curious about working with a designer for your home, I’m always happy to chat! taken in Traverse City, MI by @abodenstudio

These client updates are all about kitchens 🍳 the heart of the home, each project has its own priorities and challenges. From 90s kitchen renovations to registered historic homes, the goal is always to pay attention to what the house needs while also making it your own. They may be one of the more daunting renovations to take on, but they are always worth it!

1. This client loved these pendants, so we used these as a jump off point for the color scheme and tile details. Seeing them installed is so exciting!!! This blue is perfection 🩵

2. We are incorporating lots of vintage finds throughout this home - this client’s eye for antique pieces is impeccable and finding these chairs is a perfect starting point for an eclectic-British feel

3. Another view of this kitchen/dining room combo. The island is to die for and I can’t wait to see the tiles installed! The lighting we chose adds so much character, and I adore the mini flush mounts instead of canned lighting

4. We’re leaning into the blues for this bayside retreat! The kitchen has gorgeous blues, mixed with woods and neutral taupes and whites. Being in here is a night and day difference from where it started!

5. A brief walkthrough of this historic home kitchen renovation to show how open it is now! This kitchen needed to feel more open while keeping the storage space. It’s incredible what we were able to do by knocking down a wall, moving the range and finding a layout that accomplished everything this young family needed. taken in Downtown Traverse City by @abodenstudio

Sundays in October are the best 🍂 blue skies, leaves in bursts of colors, and kittens exploring the world around them with so much curiosity! My life isn’t complete without cats around and it’s such a joy fostering these spunky personalities 🥹 (kittens and mom are being fostered with @tcpawcatrescue) taken in Downtown Traverse City by @abodenstudio

This house may be old, but that doesn’t mean every part of it needs to feel old. I feel like sometimes we’re scared to take risks with older homes out of fear of stripping away their history. But old homes carry years and years of stories! Yours included 😽 honor the history, but make it your own (and I’m here to help you do that)

Art has long been one of my favorite pieces of design. I love the hunt and how filling the walls with pieces that inspire you truly makes a home your own.

It’s also one of the most complicated parts of design - it almost never comes together instantly. It’s built over time, sometimes painstakingly, through collected pieces from many corners of the world. Most of these are thrifted. One was a purchase from an artist in Julian, CA during a special birthday trip. Another I made myself.

Art doesn’t always have to be expensive or necessarily “mean” something. It just has to make you stop for a second and admire it. Find a balance between supporting artists and thrifting pieces. Maybe even pick up some paint and a canvas yourself! Whatever it is, just make sure it brings a smile to your face ☺️ taken in Downtown Traverse City by @abodenstudio

Happy September, my friends! Summer is beginning to wind down along with all the hustle and bustle it brings. I honestly have never been much of a summer gal, but this summer felt different. It went by quickly and I don’t feel quite as ready for cooler temps. Losing Minnie has somehow made time feel even faster and we’re quickly getting further and further away from the time we had with her. But we kept busy and tried to heal as best as we could.

Summer snapshots: we started in Italy, where we explored with some of our favorite people, drank lots of wine, ate lots of pasta, and cried while watching the sun set in Florence. Back home we got lots of kitten and pup and baby snuggles, and lots of family time. We finished our upstairs renovation and harvested fruits and veggies from our garden, both of which we are very proud of!

Each season feels so prominent up here and it reminds me that with each season comes highs and lows, happy and sad, and always lots of changes. Fall will be no different, so for now we’ll enjoy our locals’ summer and look forward to what’s to come! taken in Downtown Traverse City by @abodenstudio
