May 19th is World Family Doctor Day!

I'm so grateful and happy to be a family doctor who specializes in sexual health and abortion care.

This summer marks 5 years that I've been on Vancouver Island taking care of women, and folks with a uterus. My passions in medicine continue to be destigmatizing abortion care and educating about pain management options for gynecological procedures.

Family doctors do it all! I'm super proud to be one, and to be given the opportunity to help patients through some of their toughest moments in life.

That's my superpower 🩺

No one else is going to romanticize your life for you ✨

I was told it was selfish of me to not want kids growing up. (By people in the evangelical christian church). Now I generally think it's more selfish to have kids than not, but I imagine parenting makes you a more selfless person than you were before.

And maybe it's actually just misogyny, for men to tell me it's selfish to put my needs first.

The older I get, the more glad I am that I listened to myself about not wanting kids, and didn't let the world or my upbringing sway me from my decision!

*& yes I'm aware women with kids can do a lot of these same things, but this is specifically for all my childfree by choice people!

Some reflection after surgery this week.

I wish we lived in a world where there were no moral distinctions between any of the numerous reasons people see me for care.

It's all necessary medical care.

And patients deserve to have physicians who are compassionate and have the expertise to help them. Often at some of the worst moments in their lives.

Shame and stigma have no place here.

Attention Canadian Mifegymiso Prescribers!

There is a new compassionate mifegymiso program you can use for your patients through this pharmacy in Ontario.

I've already used it for patients of mine in BC who didn't have coverage.

You can email them on the (fairly straightforward) instructions on how to access this for your patients!

I thought I would use this time before the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation next week, to discuss one of the lesser known examples of medical racism in gynecology.

Go read Jeannie Morgan's thesis from 2007, on the use of depo-provera on marginalized people before it was even approved by Health Canada. This happened in many countries, including Canada in the Yukon and NWT.

Did you know the background of the depo-provera shot?

It can sometimes be a helpful medicine, but in general is my least favourite option for a few reasons.

An account that I created 5 years ago to fight abortion stigma. An account that I will continue to use to advocate for gender equality and the freedom of all people from oppression.

That is the bedrock of reproductive justice, the framework which was created by black women activists.

Here are six things I wouldn't ignore as a family doctor who works solely in sexual health and abortion care.

You'd be surprised at how easy it can be for people to falsely reassure themselves that symptoms they may be experiencing are 'normal'.
