We'd get the bus over there, me and Glynn.

I slept at his on Tuesdays. We shared his attic bed. We played the supermarket game.

You had to guess the item your mate was thinking of.

It got buzzy fifteen, sixteen guesses deep. When you knew he hadn't seen the new kidney beans on aisle four.

The bus was full of people who'd given up. Some were old enough for that. We were young. We were handsome. But beyond the sparkling wristwatch and expensive Chanel we had bad self-esteem.

Nobody had a job lowlier than mine.

Not even Glynn who was off to stand in model kitchens and watch universes materialise in spoons. I was on my way to do fuck all. Please take me at my word.

Me and Glynn would get pastry and say goodbye. I'd walk to the business park. I'd think of the bus. I'd think of the woman with only one tooth.
