In Mae Sot, Thailand, I directed a community mural painting project at the mental health center, Jue Jue’s Safe Space. I knew Jue Jue through my mom who is a cofounder of the organization.

We worked with community members and local artists, all who are refugee-migrants from Myanmar. Hearing about their survival in a foreign land and running from home was already familiar to me.

Although I’m unable to visit Myanmar, I was grateful to reconnect with Thailand where I grew up and to integrate with the migrant community there.

This mural is of a Burmese imaginarium—in the paddy fields, among snakes and egrets, where we can feel safe—at least enough to let down our guards, to rest our eyes, on the back of a strong buffalo. #artist #recordinghistory taken in Mae-Sot, Thai-Myanmar Border by @absolute.h

Join us for 𝗜𝗜:𝟱𝟵, a thesis exhibition composed of works from the undergraduate Honors art students at the University of Maryland.

𝗜𝗜:𝟱𝟵 is when time reaches the edge. The past has gone, and the future has yet to begin. Everything hangs for a breath, yet time does not pause — it moves on, carrying hesitation with it. Even in a brief moment like this one, there is time to reflect.

This piece depicts a face beaten in drag, swaddled by monk robes. It’s ultraviolent and nonsexual. It’s the cultural adversity between queerness and tradition—both in the homeland and the community here. It’s bringing to light the shame and wrongdoings upon one another. Buddhism is queer. Buddhism is free.

The mythical land of 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘈𝘴𝘪𝘢 is far from fiction.

Montgomery County is teeming with Asians damn close to whiteness! Southeast Asia is a hotspot destination for white flighters, and where they might go to adopt exotic wives and children. For some of us, our proximity to the colonizer allows us the privilege to travel home quite easily. For others, we reject fascism and we bear the pain of exile. And we stay in this land—both foreign and home to us. It is stolen like our identities, but it also breeds new culture and gives us modern faces. 𝙒𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙖 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨 both here and at home.

In the painting, a Burmese farmer commands a great ashen elephant, blazing across the land, trampling over peacocks and a rotting forest.🌀The deceiver who is one of our own, tramples the jungle, with reckless heed, empowered by the colonial and the feudal seed.

I designed these posters and created Myanmar Youth Power to contextualize the 2021 Spring Revolution for Burmese-American youth. They remind us that the fight for liberation is long and arduous. And if we burn, then you burn with us. #savemyanmar #freeburma by @absolute.h

We feed the cow to plow our fields and feed us back. This reciprocal relationship is foundational to Myanmar and Philippine agrarian society and resistance.
