OUT NOW! 🌎

My new single ‘This thing called life’ featuring @illajyanceyboy & @abstractorchestra is out now on @firstwordrecords 🫡 ✨

It’s been a lonnnnnnnngggg time coming (no lie), I almost considered renaming it ‘This thing called long’ 🤣

There’ve been many ups and downs, back and forths and so on… BUT… I’ve learnt, particularly with this song, that good things really do come to those who wait and Illa J’s verse is the pièce de résistance! 🤌🏽✨

I’m very proud of this one and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did making it. Thank you abundantly to everyone who made this song possible: especially…

John Derek Yancey ‘Illa J’ - lyricist/composer
Rob Mitchell - producer/composer/lyricist/saxes
Tom Burton – vocal recording engineer
Simon Beddoe trumpet
Kev Holbrough - trombone
Madeline Fitzgerald - violin

Choir - Nuala Murphy, Phoebe Bedford, Romy Taylor , Hadadsah Daniels, Leah Brown, Nadia Amini, Louq, Tom, Danny Moreno, Rosie Myers, Becka Ward
Michelle ‘Impack’ Nzolani – composer/producer

Tomorrow, ‘This Thing Called Life’ is finally yours! ✨

This is a song about our shared humanity. A reminder that whatever our background or circumstances, we’re all partaking in the same fragile, beautiful experience together 🌎💕

Featuring @illajyanceyboy & @abstractorchestra.

Collaborating with Illa J and Abstract Orchestra has been a genuine dream come true. (If you’d have told 18 year-old Ruby she’d one day release a song with Illa J… she never would’ve believed you!!)
Thank you so much, John, for bringing your Yancey Boy magic to this song! ✨

Huge thanks to @rob_mitchell_official for all you have done musically and for making this collaboration possible. Working with you has been a joy! 🌸

This video became a journey of its own, with footage captured from my home of West Yorkshire… to as far and wide as Las Vegas, India and Morocco.

Huge thank you to @cw_visuals and @sarahsamira for shooting and editing and for additional footage by @remi22nice and @da.neatie ❤️

🕊️we’re sad to hear about the passing of @kanyakingcbe

She gave us an amazing opportunity a long time ago for which we’re ever grateful.

Her incredible legacy of @moboawards continues supporting and celebrating black music, and providing a platform for artists to be seen. Her vision has impacted music and culture, thank you Kanya 💚

🎛️ I’m very lucky to have access to this amazing desk, the SSL 4000G…..the numbers speak for themselves!!! this classic 80’s desk makes everything sound better. I’ve used it for tracking vocals, choir, strings, horns, keys, drums, and for full mixes…..it’s always a joy to use…..an SSL day is a good day!!!

I used it to track and pre-mix strings and horns before sending to producer 👑 @youngrj313 for this fan-tas-tic @officialslumvillage track ‘To the Disco’ 🪩 ft. @abstractorchestra incredible bars from J and @t3slum

Available on vinyl and all streaming platforms…

It’s a G thang 😉

It was an honour to contribute to @bbc1xtra special documentary marking 20 years since J Dilla’s passing, exploring his deep connection to the UK.

J Dilla: The UK Story, hosted by @casskidd dives into his impact on UK artists like @therealkano @littlesimz and @disclosure - contributions from @petetongofficial @jamzsupernova @benjib @senseiapex @slowemusic @vicebeats @dcharnas @phat_kat_aka_ronnie_euro @yemitheabiade

Great to be able to highlight the musical diversity of young musicians @leedsmusicdrama @leedsmusiceducation_ and the impact of Dilla’s music on the next generation.

Abstract Orchestra-The Lost Tapes

I received a brilliant opportunity very early on in my film-making journey, I went to see Abstract Orchestra at the O2 in Sheffield. Thanks to the ace @mikeclipboard , they were performing their orchestral versions of J Dilla. I happened to take a few shots whilst attending, to my surprise they reached out and asked if I'd cover their next gig with Illa J, where I made a sort of compilation video of the night.

After that I was asked if I could create some live session videos for their MF Doom album, taking place at the Abbeydale picture house in Sheffield, thanks to @felicityhoy This was a fantastic opportunity for me and I loved the band and the music so it was a no brainer. As I was fairly new to making live music videos, I struggled somewhat. And whilst I think I did the best I could with my experience at the time, looking back there are clear mistakes I made that affected the final videos.

A short time after completion, I was the victim of a ransomware attack on my computer, meaning I still had the files but were encrypted. It seemed massively unlikely I would ever get the files back as you only do if they arrest the person who committed the attack. So I stored my hard drive for the last 7 years. In 2025 the person was arrested and I managed to get my long lost files back.

Using what I've learnt over the years, I've re edited the footage into a compilation clip, less so to match the shots to the actual songs but more so a mix of my favourite bits of the footage.

The band is incredible and I would urge you to take any opportunity to see them live, such great energy and vibes around them!
