Abstract Orchestra — Madvillain Vol. 1 (2018)

Covering Madvillainy is a risky move. It's one of hip-hop's most sacred records, and its magic lives in the dust. This British big band is smart enough not to copy it. Instead, they pull out the jazz and old film-score bones that were always hiding inside Madlib's loops, then let the horns stretch out. It's brighter and more playful than the original, and at times I missed DOOM's murky, closed-in weirdness. But the grooves stay grimy, and hearing those beats breathe in a live room is a real treat.

Verdict: Play it for the jazz snob who thinks hip-hop isn't real music, then hand them the original.

THE CRATE RADIO #532 with NUUN on @radioalhara

Not a club set. The record collection underneath the DJ.

Nuun (@nuun_music) is Nagham Ibraheem, Damascus born, now deep in Dubai's minimal house circuit with an EP on the way. She came to electronic music through singing, violin and Underground House in Syria.

Her hour is built around the female voice. Fairuz singing Ziad Rahbani about a street sweeper. @azizamustafazadeh folding Azeri mugham into jazz. @yasminehamdan inventing modern Arabic electronica in post-war Beirut. The 4 Cats throwing a window open at minute 47. Nai Palm (artykarateparty) closing it out.

Underneath it, almost everyone here is playing music from somewhere they are not. A Casablanca producer writing a São Paulo sunset. A Leeds big band playing Dilla. A Dutch band playing Anatolian folk. For a Syrian artist building a sound in Dubai, that reads like a self-portrait.

Opens with Hiroshi Suzuki, a Japanese trombonist whose 1976 record flopped and only found its people forty years later. Closes with Nai Palm singing after cancer.

Abstract Orchestra - Madvillain Vol. 2 🎵
LP Album (2019)
@ata_records
@abstractorchestra

🔸One of the best ways to imagine Madlib and MF DOOM’s universe outside hip-hop: big band jazz, funk and 70s film soundtracks, all in the same mix.

🔸Led by arranger Rob Mitchell, Abstract Orchestra transforms Madlib’s beats with powerful brass, Rhodes, saxophones, trombones and a rhythm section that keeps the groove alive. References to Quincy Jones, Lalo Schifrin and David Shire give the album an incredible cinematic feel.
And the best part: much of the album was recorded live, in single takes, leaving plenty of room for dynamics and spontaneity.

🔸This isn’t simply Madvillain in a jazz version. It’s Madvillain reinvented by a big band that truly understands Madlib’s language.
A record for anyone who loves hip-hop, jazz and music with soul.

Happy Born Day DOOM.

Here's my updated collection as of today. If you have any questions leave comments! I'll list off some general categories these are all in since it's a lot!

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pics are of main albums. Mostly all DOOMs main titles that I have. Any duplicates are special copies that I got for a reason. I initially bought whatever I could find in store so I have a bunch of regular black pressings. I then started buying duplicates that either are anniversary, limited, an alternative cover, has and OBI strip, or they came with another piece of music like the Flexi disc in the Born Like This vinyl.

The 4th pic is instrumental related DOOM projects. I also have Tyler, The Creators first album on vinyl and tape but I didn't include them but there's a song Tyler reworked DOOMs sample for one of his tracks. These projects are all Instrumentals related to DOOM.

The 5th and 6th pics are remix albums and tribute albums. Top left are 3 limited to 5 Abstract Orchestra test pressings for each of the projects they did. I some how managed to get a box set edition of Cookin Souls DOOM Xmas.

The 7th and 8th pics are DOOM singles. So either his own or singles he was featured on or helped produce. One is signed to me by the artist that featured DOOM which is cool.

The 9th and 10th pics are projects that Feature DOOM. My most recent and favorites are the @idk Mixtape from this year. I have 3 variants, the gatefold, and two OBI strip variants from different countries. The 3 records at the bottom are just thrown on as they relate to DOOM. The left most is a Puma promo box set that features a 12 inch with Fancy Clown pressed into it. The middle is a Mickey Diamond tribute cover. And the right is. Big Mauer single tribute cover.

The 11th, 12th, and 13th pics are my 10 inch, laser disc, 7 inch, and 3 inch DOOM related records. A few low numbered and some test pressings in here.

[Ran out of room will continue in the comments]

I tagged a bunch of people who's music is in the post. Go check them out!
