We as student groups are deeply concerned by the promotion of self testing rape kits on university campuses.

We call on our Students Unions to support our calls to ensuring that students receive accurate information about self-testing rape kits so they can make an informed decision.

Today we want to highlight what rape charities, legal groups and forensic organisations have said about these kits.

We want to remind you that SARC centres do a lot more than just collecting dna samples.

They perform injury checks, provide immediate contraceptives if needed, STI testing and can offer the emotional support so many survivors need.

Student based organisations across the UK, Student Unions and activists alike have, and continue) to make change to eliminate sexual violence on campus.

Support them, get involved and let’s work together. by @academicsagainstassault

🪧Almost two thirds (62%) of students and graduates have experienced sexual violence at UK universities (Revolut & The Student Room, 2018.) We’re calling on the Prime Minister to mandate consent education at Uni. Not “inform us,” actually teach us about enthusiastic consent and healthy relationships.

🎓Currently there is no legal requirement for Universities in the UK to provide this training, and alot of them dont. OFS regulation (condition E6) are too vague, too passive and too little too late.

It’s time for institutions to meet our young people where we need them to. Times have changed, and so have campuses all over the UK. Higher education students have been left out of all VAWG policy, when the data proves they need it just as much as secondary education age. Together, with your help, we can change the law and lives of future generations of students.

Shocked?!

So were we.

These statistics really bring home the pervasiveness of harmful gender stereotypes in the online world. Whether it be posts from within the man box or reels talking about how to conform to hegemonic understandings of femininity, from the minute young people open social media, algorithms are pushing them content based on their gender.

Plan International’s in-depth study titled ‘From Memes to Misogyny’ not only highlights the dangers of this, but more importantly reveals the lack of counter-narratives served to young boys.

Fortunately, things don’t have to stay this way forever. Young people want it to change. And so do we. Young people must be at the forefront of digital policy and the online world must be regulated appropriately. Banning social media isn’t the answer. Ensuring social media and AI is secure by design is.

Over recent weeks, the news has been filled with stories covering the danger AI poses for our younger generations. From the proliferation of sexually explicit deepfakes to some young people’s growing reliance on AI to feel a sense of connection, there are a multitude of ways in which AI is causing irreparable damage.

Within the VAWG space, there are several fabulous campaigns shedding light on this issue and advocating for change, such as Call It What It Is by @everyonesinvited and Georgia’s Law by @georgialouiseharrison. At Academics Against Assault, we stand in full solidarity with these campaigns. It is time that safety is made a priority and that we hold the tech giants who develop it accountable.

If you have been affected by AI accelerated sexual harm during your time at school and feel able to share your story, head over to Everyone’s Invited’s Instagram bio and click on their testimonies link. ✍️

The 11th of September marked 6 months since the release of Louis Theroux’s documentary on the manosphere. 🎥

While it sparked national conversations at the time, such discussions have since fizzled, ultimately replaced by the next trending item.

With students back in the classroom, it is important to remember the role we play in tackling misogynistic attitudes early, before it escalates. Teachers need support from the government in educating the young people of today on the dangers of the online world and the importance of digital literacy.

If we keep letting these conversations fade, nothing will change.

Your girls were invited to PARLIAMENT!! Huge congratulations to @makeitmandatory and @amnestyfeminist for such an amazing campaign #RSEto18.

Recently VAWG has been overshadowed by anti-immigration and anti-trans campaigning, and it’s so refreshing to meet as a collective to discuss the ACTUAL problems facing young women and girls, calling MPs to action on mandatory sex and relationship education until 18. Lots of people think this is already a policy, but in practise there are so many loopholes which leave young people without the knowledge of coercive control, and basic sexual wellbeing education. Without this language, young people are left without the tool to call abuse what it is and recognise red flags in relationships and sex.

It’s so important to hear how this policy would impact on survivors and experts by lived experience, and after listening to @killedwomennw notyourpxrn and some other amazing speakers, we express at @academicsagainstassault our deep commitment and support for this action.

Big moment. Big win. Still more to do.

This week our founder Molly stood at the gates of Downing Street alongside incredible VAWG campaigners to hand in a petition demanding an end to Image Based Sexual Abuse, and mark the long-awaited criminalisation of deepfakes.

This matters. But let’s be clear: criminalising deepfakes is only the first step.
If platforms continue to drag their feet, survivors are left exposed. That’s why we’re calling on big tech to implement a 48-hour takedown policy. No delays. No excuses.

Huge congratulations and gratitude to @glamouruk @jodiecampaigns @notyourpxrn @evawuk for this groundbreaking petition — and to every survivor and campaigner pushing this change forward. We’re watching closely, and we won’t stop here.

Survivors deserve protection now, not later.
Accountability can’t be optional.

so so so proud of this launch at Royal Holloway. These leaflets especially are so important, and needed in as many student spaces around campus as possible.

Was so lovely chatting to so many people about AAA. A big thankyou to all the team that’s showed up to be at the stall with me @chloe_marcellino @rosyyyy.m @_laartje by @academicsagainstassault
