Belated post: in this household, holiday celebrations always include—no surprise!—food. For Valentine’s Day, we decided on brunch…in particular, @altonbrown’s French Toast Croqué Monsieur with Orange Thyme syrup. Nothing overly elaborate, and it didn’t quite have the pants-dropping 😳 effect that Mr. Brown suggested in his YouTube video, but we enjoyed it immensely!

If you are considering a midwinter visit to the Bay Area, be forewarned…winter weather here on the coast seriously sucks right now. I mean, it didn’t even get over 71° today, and tonight it’s actually forecast to dip before 50°! Don’t come. 😬

OK, HMB locals, here’s a tip: if you shop at @spanglersmarket (which beats giving your hard-earned food budget to a corporate giant…but I digress) and you see anything, anywhere in the store, labeled as a team member’s creation, GET SOME. For example, today this Lambalaya Soup was spotted, labeled as a creation of @sergiodabutcher. Did I have some? Of course. Was it incredible? Also of course. Bravo Zulu, Maestro!

When one has a 4-day weekend, one has enough time to…make bagels for brunch! My bagel method took a turn for the better this year thanks to a multi-day workshop from Mike Kalanty (aka chefmikebreads)—thank you, Chef!—and here you see the outcome. I usually take my first one with cream cheese, capers, smoked salmon, lemon, and black pepper, but we just happened to have some crabmeat left over from a local friend’s catch, so I divided my seafood accordingly. Front and center is one of Mike’s recommended spreads: a blend of cream cheese and fruit preserves (in this case, apricot, courtesy of another local friend with a small orchard) with prepared horseradish and dry mustard. Yum!

Well, the weather—aided and abetted 🤬 by a certain corrupt power company (coughPG&Ecough)—tried its hardest to confound our holiday dinner plan on Thursday, but we made the best of it and held a few dishes for last night. The final menu was prime rib, fresh shaved horseradish and horseradish cream sauce, popovers, herbed fingerling potatoes, sweet corn tomalito, roasted maple-glazed carrots, and creamed spinach. Here are the demo plates…first the beef, popover, potatoes, and corn, then ⬅️ for the carrots and spinach separately. Then ⬅️ again for our dessert course: the Meringue Whisperer’s gorgeous Yule log, plus crème brûlée. Was it all delectable? Uh…yeah. 😋

BTS? ⬅️ to see the roast freshly out from under the broiler, and ⬅️ again to see it just before it started its 6-hour slow roasting. As always, kudos and a tip of the toque to the Maestro of Meat, @sergiodabutcher at @spanglersmarket, for an amazing dry-aged prime rib roast—thank you, Maestro!!!

Reason no. 469,753 why I love living here in HMB: @spanglersmarket. Pictured here is their meat department’s special dry-aging vault, and if you look closely on the right side you will see MY very own holiday prime rib roast, hanging out until it reaches perfection. I ordered it a few weeks ago from the Maestro of Meat himself, @sergiodabutcher, and in 5 more days, after slow-roasting and a quick searing, it will adorn our dinner table. You won’t find that level of service—or that quality!—at your big-chain megamart. The whole Spangler’s team seriously *rocks*. Thanks, Maestro! 💙
