Claiming expenses that fail the Wholly and Exclusively rule.

Not criminal. Not intentional. Just wrong.

And HMRC doesn’t care about your intentions; the unpaid tax, interest, and penalties land either way.

Here’s what gets people flagged:
🚩 Business trips with personal days tagged on
🚩 Personal phones claimed without evidencing the business split
🚩 Home broadband on a personal contract
🚩 Gym memberships justified as ‘productivity’
🚩 Client meals with no record of business purpose
The rule is simple. The expense must be spent wholly and exclusively for business. Not mostly. Not mainly. Wholly. Exclusively. Fully.

One dual purpose and the entire claim is disallowed. Not just the personal part; the whole thing. 😬

The good news? Innocent mistakes carry lower penalties than fraud. But you still owe the tax; plus interest.
