Working on two, Derbyshire model A lathes. One has a rack and pinion operated slide, that I just painted back to the original color…. I re did the spindle on that one, quite awhile ago, and got it running back into specs.

The second one I found in a CT auction listed as a vice 😂 I couldn’t pass it up.

The cross slide on that one I got in multiple pieces from @david.lindow on a trade for a giant Rockwell hardness tester.

The slide was in multiple pieces and missing a few components. Thankfully Derbyshire is still in business in Massachusetts, and I received the last component last week.

I still havnt checked the spindle… so that might be another project…. And I’m unsure of the index wheel on the back. It was professionally made, and dosnt want to come off.

One day, instead of fixing all the damn tools I have, I’ll make something.

I was so intrigued with this micro lathe. The group of use tried to understand it. @xianlindow figured out its main function… as to what it produces? Who knows… I have a guess.

The coolest mini milling machine, made by Stark tools. This beautiful example is located in a top secret tool junky den, of a great friend of mine.

I’m going to try and find more info on this. I’m not sure if it was a one off factory tool, or production.

Cleaned up, de rusted this cool stepped collet chuck, patented 1899 with a K&D stamp on it. K&D were importers of quality tools, from what I understand.

Put some high pressure oil on the cam, cleaned up the action. Now she’s alive, easy little project.

When I saw this up for auction, I was hopeful that it would be able to take other collets. As you saw it’s a special collet, just for this device.

It gives me some ideas for cam lever collet chucks.

I got issues with too many projects.

Quite a strange device. It appears that it’s a optical comparator. Why the , would the object be sealed inside? Maybe it’s a optical device I’m not familiar with. Maybe someone else will know.

What is its function?

Looking over a lathe… who’s function, nor maker I know…. Hunting for clues, and appreciating some antique craftsmanship.

She was built well.

Non obvious clues:
cross slide is a rack and pinion
Hand wheels are wood
Cross slide top takes a compression collet.
Slide has a zero marking, looks like it can be angled
Unknown headstock collet
There’s a break on the back pulley

I have my guess to what it is, and possibly where in came from.

Found this odd tool.
From its appearance I thought I knew what it is…

- It’s Bronze (wasn’t certain from eBay photo)
- Hand scraped
- Says “Headstock Press” in middle
- Stored in small wood box
