Imagine having important information appear right before your eyes when every second counts.

Researchers at the Alberta Children's Hospital are testing how augmented reality could one day support health-care teams during pediatric emergencies. In the donor-funded KidSIM Simulation Centre, holographic prompts are being studied during simulated pediatric resuscitations.

Community support helps create the environment where promising ideas can be developed and evaluated, opening new possibilities for kids and families.

We are thrilled for our friend Kean who today was announced as the Calgary Fire Department’s Junior Fire Chief, in front of many of his adoring fans including members of his care team.

Last Christmas, Kean benefited from specialized burn care at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

We are grateful to the @_cfbts Calgary Firefighter’s Burn Treatment Society for their generous support of the hospital’s Burn Treatment Program that is helping children heal from burn injuries.

Congrats Kean! by @achfkids

Twenty years ago today, Calgary made way for 51 very precious passengers.

Ambulances carried some of our community’s sickest children from the hospital on Richmond Road to the new Alberta Children’s Hospital. Across the city, people stayed off the roads to help ensure children would arrive safely.

Inside, move teams were ready. Music was playing. Every child had an individual care plan. Everyone knew their role.

Then came the announcement: “The last patient has arrived safely.” The hospital erupted into cheers — and tears. Three simple words followed: “Good work, everyone.”

It was the beginning of a new chapter for 51 children and their families, and a new era in child health for our whole community. Today, we celebrate everyone who helped build the hospital, and everyone who has filled these walls with extraordinary care ever since.

Today @achfkids celebrates 20 years! On September 27th, 2006, that big beautiful building on the hill opened its doors.

Today we celebrate and recognize what generous donors have helped make possible for children and families who rely on the Alberta Children’s Hospital. That includes the hospital programs, research and equipment at the hospital, as well as donor-supported places like Rotary Flames House and The Summit. The “All for One, All for Kids” campaign raised $52 million to build the hospital. It was the largest fundraising campaign of its kind in western Canada (at the time).

Here’s to another 20 years! 🎉 by @achfkids

Happy birthday to the Alberta Children’s Hospital! 🎈

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since the move to the new hospital.

In October 2004, I became critically ill with a staph infection while at our family’s cabin near Vulcan. The hospital there were not equipped to handle to sick I was and they reached out the Alberta Children’s Hospital’s Transport Team. A snowstorm meant aircraft couldn’t fly, so the Team came from Calgary by ground ambulance in a blizzard to bring me back for the intensive care I urgently needed.

When I arrived at the old Children’s, my organs were shutting down. I had essentially no pulse, no blood pressure and machines helping keep me alive. My family didn’t know whether I would survive. The doctors and nurses didn’t either. But that didn’t stop them from fighting to keep me alive.

That first stay was just the beginning. For several years afterward, I was in and out of hospital for more surgeries, treatment and support as I grew.

So in September 2006, I was back in hospital when it was time to move across the city.
I was one of 51 children transported that day. Behind every ambulance was a huge amount of planning—and a family trusting you with someone they loved.
When we arrived here at this hospital, the difference was incredible.

It literally was night and day. The light, the windows, the space—it changed what being in hospital felt like. When you spend as much time there as I did, that matters.

You got to know me. You helped me through things no kid should have to face, and somehow, I came away with mostly positive memories.
That’s a pretty remarkable thing.

Thank you for never giving up on me, for supporting my family, and for helping me come through it all with a positive attitude and a smile still on my face.
And thank you for doing the same for the next kid who needs you.

Happy 20th birthday. It was amazing to be back and share this moment with you all. 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 taken in Alberta Children's Hospital by @achfkids

One of the first patients transferred to the new Alberta Children’s Hospital. One of its sickest. And a journey that would take him all the way to Team Canada. ❤️

At just 10 years old, Zak Madell was critically ill, relying on machines to keep him alive.

Few could have imagined that he would one day become one of the world’s leading wheelchair rugby athletes, representing Canada on the international stage.

As we celebrate 20 years of the “new” Alberta Children’s Hospital, Zak reflects on the care, connections and community that shaped his life — and the hospital that saved it twice.

Read Zak’s story and more about the hospital’s 20th birthday at the link in our bio.
