Artist creating whimsical scenes featuring original acorn characters. Posting daily creations and behind the scenes look at how I create my art.

Dahlia Bloomburg wistfully dances through Dark Oak Woods with the exuberance of a child let loose in a candy shop. She is celebrating the end of the growing season. Chilly nights will soon be followed by frost covered leaves. Dahlia doesn't mind. She celebrates every season! In Winter, she ice dances on frozen ponds. In spring, she do-si-dos through flower filled meadows. And in summer, she tap dances through puddles while thunder provides a deep rumbling rhythm. She truly is a flower child.

Artist's Note: Dahlia's dress is a dahlia that I grew in my garden this summer. I was hoping to use these gorgeous blooms in more whimsical scenes, but time slipped away. Their blossoms will soon be gone, and I am already thinking of winter scenes to photograph.

The Banshee wanders through the ancient cemetery her wild gray hair swaying like dirty sheets in the wind. She is rambling towards an unfortunate family's home. Her piercing scream foretells of impending doom. It is a warning that someone in that family will die. This is one mythical figure you definitely don't want to see or hear.

Artist's Note: I shot this image at Muckross Abbey in Killarney National Park, Ireland. The Banshee is described as an older woman with red eyes, long flowing gray hair, and wearing a grey cloak over a green dress. I tried adding a cloak to my figure, but did not think it looked right. I wanted something "Irish" in this image which is why I positioned a Celtic cross in the background.

Grandpa Oakham has seen many natural wonders over his well-weathered life. Synchronized fireflies, a solar eclipse, and the mesmerizing dance of the aurora borealis. Near the top of nature's best shows has to be the colorful change of leaves. As temperatures drop and days grow shorter, Dark Oak Forest's canopy turns into a kaleidoscope of red, yellow, and orange. He can't remember a year when the colors were so vibrant. Today he is surveying this ephemeral masterpiece from high up on Grizzly Granite Ridge with his best bud, Hawkeye. They'll spend the night listening to owls hooting and screeching as the wind gently whistles over their tent. At sunrise, after some coffee and kibble, they will begin the slow descent back home.

Prints of this scene are available at: https://www.acornwhimsy.com/product/heart-lake-hiker/4QWNDO3N7F7TTCSLM7O7TFXC?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=false&category_id=L6QTEBYHILM4SG3N4CXRZF7S

Artist's Note: I photographed this scene last week from Mt. Jo in the Adirondacks. The colors this year were so bright and made the perfect background for a few Acorn Whimsy scenes.

Wisconsin Slim lines up his shot, hoping to drop the nine ball in the corner pocket. Willie Acorni watches patiently from his barstool, hoping that his opponent won't run the table allowing him another chance for the win.

Artist's Note: This was a custom build for a customer meant to be an Acorn Whimsy version of their basement billiard room. Here is a link to a Behind the Scenes video of how I created this scene: https://www.facebook.com/reel/2444968579677081
Also, if you didn't get the names in this story you must not have watched enough billiards on television in the 70's!

I often get asked if I do custom work, and the answer is “Yes”! I love working with customers to create an original and unique piece of art. Recently, I was asked to create a billiard room modeled after a customer’s basement. Here is a quick look at how I created this scene. Do you want a custom Acorn Whimsy piece? Muster some courage and take a small step out of your comfort zone on this National Face Your Fears Day! What is it that causes you to have a panic attack? Clowns? Heights? Squirrels? Don't let that fear control you. Be like Sir Lonefeather who is facing his biggest fear face to face today. Since a young lad, Sir Lonefeather has feared the dragons roaming the pastoral countryside. Legends of their flammable breath made his knees wobble like a sapling in strong wind. Today, however, he has conjured the fortitude to take on the dreaded Red Dragon of Emberfield. With only his sword and shield, this brave nut hopes to conquer his fear along with this winged fire-sneezing beast before the sun sets behind his castle for the night.

Want a print? This and more knight and dragon images can be purchased at: https://www.acornwhimsy.com/shop/knight-and-dragon/AGT5DX26PHJD2F5CX6JGN5UP

Artist's Note: I took this photo in front of Ross Castle in Killarney National Park, Ireland. You might recognize the dragon from a shot I posted earlier. I built it just for our brief one day tour into the mountains of Snowdonia in Wales. Since I already had these characters with me, I thought a classic fight in front of a beautiful castle was only fitting.

On this National Farmers Day, Mel Onman is harvesting his fields. All summer long, Mel's been fussier over his field than a mama squirrel over her winter stash. In springtime he kept sassy crows away from tender seedlings. Midsummer's weekly waterings to quench the growing fruit's thirst. And weeds? Pft.... not on this farmer's watch. He yanked them by the roots before they had the chance to grow. Now come the fruits of his labor... and what fruits they are! Large and juicy watermelons bigger than an acorn's head with flesh red as garnets. Farmer Mel is beaming over his precious crop which is sure to fetch a pretty penny at the market.

Artist's Note: I had been planning this photo since last winter. I saw an advertisement for Cucamelons, tiny cucumbers that look like mini watermelons. They looked to be the perfect size for the acorns. So, I bought a pack of seeds and grew them. They turned out perfect!

Put a smile on someone's face today. Afterall, it's National Spready Joy Day! Piper Larkspur is spreading the joy with music pouring from her squeezebox. Birds perch on low hanging branches and add harmonies. Insects crawl through grasses to dance to her rhythms. And everyone within earshot taps their feet while a broad smile grows on their face.

Artist's Note: I photographed Piper at the famous Blarney Castle. The bellows of her accordion are made from folded mulberry paper.

Keep a song in your heart on this Universal Music Day! Music truly is universal. Melodies and lyrics can be found in every culture since the beginning of time. Nature has it's own musicians from birds of the air to whales of the deep blue. Outside his strong fortress, King Strummer plays a little ditty on the bouzouki for his lovely queen. He sings of her beauty compared to the flowering countryside. Naturally, she blushes with each note.

Artist's Note: I built this bouzouki for our trip to Ireland. It is in the lyre family and has a very long neck and rounded body. I photographed this scene at Trim Castle in County Meath.

Happy National Leif Erickson Day!
Leif is thought to have been the first European to set foot on North America, long before Columbus. Some believe the settlement he built, called Leifsbudir, was on the northern tip of Newfoundland. Archeologists have uncovered a small Viking settlement here which is now called L'Anse aux Meadows. Here is my nutty Norse explorer Leif Acornson with L'Anse aux Meadows in the background. This was a great area to explore with a colorful cast characters roleplaying as Vikings.

Blow me down... it's World Octopus Day. Today we honor these eight-legged creatures known for their intelligence, camouflage, and beauty. Two brothers, Reef and Wade, had no inklings of this special day, but they would soon have a close encounter that would leave them speechless. They were spending a day at the beach exploring the underwater world of tidepools. Wade was picking up some sea stars for a closer look when something tickled his ankle. A large shadow slunk from under a large piece of coral. Wade froze momentarily then tried running to the safety of the beach. He did not realize that a leviathan was attached to his limbs. The octopus was only protecting his five fingered friends, not wanting to see them being nut-handled. Wade fainted with legs coiled around him. Gently, the giant cephalopod grabbed his celestial shaped friends and slithered back towards the open water. It would be years before Wade and Reef would enter the water again.

Hang on tight to your britches... it's Fire Prevention Week! The Oakville Volunteer Fire Department has a large sign on the firehouse.
NEW RECRUITS WANTED.
Must love big red trucks, loud sirens, and not be afraid of getting dirty.
Enter Ash Sweeper. This little nut has dreamed of being a firefighter since he knee high to a grasshopper. With all the bravery he can muster he is ready to tackle the battery of tests. He flew up the ladder faster than a squirrel finding the last walnut of the season. His skills with the axe were sharp and precise, like a lumberjack on a mission. But then came the hose. He held on tight as Captain Sparky yelled, "Water on!" Wooooosh! He definitely felt the pressure as the water shot out the nozzle and shot him up in the air. Feet flapping wildly like scarecrow in a tornado, he launched high into the air. For a moment, he felt like an astronaut wobbling in the clouds. Captain Sparky ordered the water be turned off, then SPLAT! Ash crashed to the ground feeling dizzy and wet. He might need a rest before attempting to drive a fire truck through the obstacle course.

Artist's Note: Yes! That is a real working fire hose. I used some tubing for a misting system that I attached to a garden hose. The hardest part was figuring out how much pressure to turn on (it didn't take much!). Ash was hot glued to the hose which was attached to a clamp so it didn't move too much for the photo.
