If you’d like a little insight to my process with Concert Photography….

A trick I typically use is checking setlists online from previous shows to get an idea of what songs are coming my way, even if I’m familiar with the band or artist. I truly find that it helps me anticipate high points, moves and gestures, and keeps me on time to leave once the allotted songs are up. I mean, let’s face it, how many times have we all looked at each other and said “was that 2 or 3?”

In Muse’s case, they switched it up from what I’d been seeing on previous setlists, and I got to see two of my favorite songs — “Hysteria” and “Supermassive Black Hole.” Knowing those songs like the back of my hand, it brought a difference in emotion to the shots I was able to get.

Many of us, especially the ones that are constantly shooting for work, can start to just go through the paces without pouring their creativity into it. I truly believe that if I have an emotional attachment to an artist or band’s music (or at the very least a familiarity with their vibe), that helps me world build more with what I’m creating versus just cracking off clear shots.

Ticking another band off my never-seen list 🤘 @setitoff 🤘

Out of all my sets at @upheavalfestival, I find my best ones tend to come from “upstairs,” aka the Lookout Stage.

Everyone was talking about how this set was a must-see and I get why now. High energy and charisma were off the charts!

About a year ago, a drunk guy put his arm around me at Emo Nite and told me that if I wanted to hear a sick band, I needed to check out @zero — and I finally did.

I’m happy to report he wasn’t wrong 🤘.

ZERO 9:36 had to battle extreme heat for their performance which messed with their laptop to give them a false start. Now, normally I wouldn’t bring that up but the way Matthew Cullen handled it was great.

The band worked through the issues while he told stories, and then Matthew realized when addressing a fan in the audience that they were drawing a portrait of them. He invited the person up to draw him up close, and even when the music started to play again, he let them stay up for a few.

The energy was solid, and was easily my favorite act of Friday’s @upheavalfestival lineup.

Hope to see @zero along the road one day and get another chance at 📸, hopefully in a much more temperature controlled location. 😂 taken in Upheaval Festival by @acronymis
