Yesterday, we had the honor and privilege to host 30 young people from our AFT Youth Empowerment Group at @buildchicago. Our youth got to sit down with Mayor Brandon Johnson for a powerful conversation about what Austin’s youth need most.

From affordable housing and safe spaces to job opportunities and resources for young people not on a traditional college path, our youth showed up, spoke up, and made their voices heard at the highest level of city leadership.

This is what it looks like when a city invests in its youth. We are proud of every young person who attended and had the courage to speak their truth! Thank you to @chicagosmayor and the Mayor's Office for connecting with us, and thank you to BUILD Chicago and Arewa EKUA Najim for organizing this. by @act.chicago

Check out our August Thrive newsletter, which includes an inspiring success story from Cherisha, a participant in our Chicago Neighborhood Recovery Program (CNRP), along with a recap of our annual Austin Eats Movie in the Garden, and a special dinner and fireside chat featuring BMO executives and the CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Chicago.

We’d like to give a special shoutout and thank you to Cherisha for sharing her story and allowing us to celebrate her homeownership journey. Through her participation in CNRP and engagement with ACT, Cherisha was able to take an important step toward her goal of becoming a first-time homeowner while remaining connected to the Austin community she and her family call home.

"While looking for a place to live, I discovered the Chicago Neighborhood Recovery Program, which helped people trying to live in targeted areas. I was trying to stay in the Austin area not just for myself and my family, but also for my grandparents. And being the first grandchild to buy property, I’m extremely grateful that this program helped me accomplish my goal of becoming a first-time homeowner.”
- Cherisha, CNRP Participant
