Reina Mun (SMACT '23) has been selected as one of four inaugural Serpentine FAE R&D Fellows from a pool of around 1,000 applicants worldwide. The cohort was chosen by a jury comprising Google DeepMind COO Lila Ibrahim, Refik Anadol, Holly Herndon, Cao Fei, and Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.

Over the next six months, Reina will undertake research exploring how advances in AI are reshaping the relationship between computational models and the physical and social world. The fellowship theme serves as both a prompt and a provocation, responding to a moment in which AI systems can pursue goals, model environments, and act in the world, and inviting the fellows to examine what these developments mean for cultural production, institutions, and public life.

Submerged
Work by Jonathan Nelson (SMACT ’27)
Wiesner Student Art Gallery
September 2–25, 2026

In the Anthropocene, humans, microbes, soil, and water are entangled in a web of dependencies. Beneath the soil of this building lie dormant fungi, bacteria, and yeast—trapped within historic timber piles and submerged anaerobically below the groundwater line. Driven into artificial land on the site of a former tidal flat to build MIT, these piles now threaten this campus’s very foundation.

Submerged is a speculative fiction, imagining what might happen when dependencies unravel. As the groundwater drips away, fungi awaken and begin to feed on the foundations. The very ground beneath your feet begins to creak and crumble . . .

On Tuesday morning (Sept. 8), the MIT School of Architecture and Planning (@mitsap) is on the move — literally.

Join us for The Living Bucentaur, a joyful procession on MIT’s campus marking SA+P’s move into its new home in the Metropolitan Storage Warehouse (the MET). Designed by Professor Azra Akšamija and students, the procession is being brought to life by members of the entire school community.

What’s a Bucentaur? A ceremonial Venetian vessel recreated for a pageant staged by MIT in 1916 to celebrate the Institute’s move from Boston to Cambridge. 110 years later, we’re bringing the Bucentaur back — this time, it will be made out of people.

The procession will bring together the school’s community, its work, and its history for a collective journey to the MET, a century-old Cambridge landmark newly transformed into a home for architecture, design, and planning at MIT.

For weeks, faculty, students and staff of SA+P have been creating the costumes and props that will be worn and carried that day.

We’ll begin walking at approximately 9:45 am on Tuesday, September 8. Everyone is welcome to watch and cheer the procession along the route.

Trenčín, European Capital of Culture 2026, Slovakia
August 19 – November 30, 2026

Disaster Fountain, an operative public artwork by Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas, transforms firefighting equipment into a heat-responsive urban fountain. Created in collaboration with local volunteer firefighters, the work is activated when temperatures rise above 90°F, responding to urban heat while drawing attention to water scarcity in the nearby river. It is on view from August 19 through November 30, 2026, in Trenčín, Slovakia.

This September, the MIT School of Architecture + Planning is moving into the Metropolitan Warehouse. We are marking the move by making the Living Bucentaur: a collective procession that will walk 250+ bodies of the School from its old home into the new one.

The project reimagines MIT’s 1916 Bucentaur, a ceremonial barge created when MIT moved across the Charles River from Boston to its new Cambridge campus. This time, there is no boat. We become the boat.

This summer, my students and I we have been developing it together, inviting MIT community to participate in the making process.

Retired sails become garments and wings. Oyster shells become lace and rattles. Garment bags become costumes. Books, buckets, 2×4s and umbrellas become instruments, props and strange creatures.

Cutting, sewing, folding, hammering, clapping, drumming, testing, wearing, failing, trying again. The Living Bucentaur is taking shape through many hands across the MIT community.

Some glimpses from the collaborative making so far. So much joy!

For Mehves Lelic, photography is less about choosing between opposites than learning to inhabit the liminal spaces. “As a maker, I feel like one of the greatest privileges is being able to look closely,” she says. As a self described “lens-based” artist, curator, and educator, Lelic’s work explores the spaces between apparent polarities: belonging and displacement, gratitude and grief, interior and exterior worlds, spirituality and technology, illness and healing.

“If cows didn’t like mustard there wouldn’t be any movies at all.”

When student Sophia Chefalo (SMACT ‘26) first encountered the claim in a text about photographic history, she stopped in her tracks.

The seemingly strange claim led her down an unexpected path through nineteenth-century chemistry, Kodak archives, agricultural science, animal biology, industrial history, and the material foundations of photography itself.

Luca E. Lum
August 21 – 22, 2026
H0thouse, Aliwal Arts Centre, Singapore

Political Animals continues artist and writer Luca E. Lum’s (SMACT ’25) exploration into the animal and machine as figures that parse anticipation and catastrophe as part of her larger inquiry about nonhumanity, mediation, and time. For the presentation at h0thouse, she returns more specifically to the figure of the animal as encountered through animal media.
