For the past six weeks, MIT has been the place I call home. Huge thanks to the Department of Art, Culture and Technology (ACT) for housing me as a Visiting Postdoc, and to my great hosts Gediminas Urbonas and Tobias Putrih.

Thanks to Zach Lieberman for letting me join your Future Sketches coding and drawing class at MIT Media Lab, to Svetlana Boriskina for opening the doors to your META lab and letting me weave with your incredible fibers, and to Jordan Cox and Connor Moorman from MIT.nano for guiding my X-ray studies and scans of orchids and silver crystals—opening portals to entirely new dimensions.

It’s been an incredible journey through cleanrooms and laboratories, museums and studios. Thanks to everyone I met on the way. May our paths cross again soon!

AMPHIBIAN DRIFT
XR experience + LP launch

Excited to premiere at the inaugural @mitfuturefest — a new five-day festival exploring art, science, technology, and human understanding.

📍 MIT.nano Immersion Lab (12-3207) @mitimmersionlab
60 Vassar St, Cambridge, MA 02139
🗓 October 2–3, 2026 | 11 AM–5 PM

An immersive multi-user XR experience and sonic exploration of interspecies entanglement across molecular, acoustic, and environmental scales.

At its core: a 3D model of a silk protein produced by Hydropsyche caddisfly larvae. Developed through AI-assisted molecular modeling at MIT, the previously uncharacterized protein becomes a navigable sonic environment, where molecular vibrations are translated into sound and participants’ gestures continuously reshape the soundtrack.

The experience features The Elegy of Motion by Markus J. Buehler @profbuehlermit .

The accompanying LP, Amphibian Songs v.2, features compositions by Markus J. Buehler, Nicole L’Huillier @nico_lh , Brandon LaBelle @b_llabelle , Grönlund-Nisunen @petterinisunen and Francisco López.

Concept & artistic direction: Nomeda & Gediminas Urbonas @urbonasstudio , MIT ACT @actmit , SA+P @mitsap
Protein modelling: Wei Lu / MIT LAMM
XR development: Terry Kang @techcrab101 and Thomas Lee Harriett @thomas.silent.h / Pyraloid

On Tuesday morning (Sept. 8), the MIT School of Architecture and Planning (@mitsap) is on the move — literally.

Join us for The Living Bucentaur, a joyful procession on MIT’s campus marking SA+P’s move into its new home in the Metropolitan Storage Warehouse (the MET). Designed by Professor Azra Akšamija and students, the procession is being brought to life by members of the entire school community.

What’s a Bucentaur? A ceremonial Venetian vessel recreated for a pageant staged by MIT in 1916 to celebrate the Institute’s move from Boston to Cambridge. 110 years later, we’re bringing the Bucentaur back — this time, it will be made out of people.

The procession will bring together the school’s community, its work, and its history for a collective journey to the MET, a century-old Cambridge landmark newly transformed into a home for architecture, design, and planning at MIT.

For weeks, faculty, students and staff of SA+P have been creating the costumes and props that will be worn and carried that day.

We’ll begin walking at approximately 9:45 am on Tuesday, September 8. Everyone is welcome to watch and cheer the procession along the route.

This September, the MIT School of Architecture + Planning is moving into the Metropolitan Warehouse. We are marking the move by making the Living Bucentaur: a collective procession that will walk 250+ bodies of the School from its old home into the new one.

The project reimagines MIT’s 1916 Bucentaur, a ceremonial barge created when MIT moved across the Charles River from Boston to its new Cambridge campus. This time, there is no boat. We become the boat.

This summer, my students and I we have been developing it together, inviting MIT community to participate in the making process.

Retired sails become garments and wings. Oyster shells become lace and rattles. Garment bags become costumes. Books, buckets, 2×4s and umbrellas become instruments, props and strange creatures.

Cutting, sewing, folding, hammering, clapping, drumming, testing, wearing, failing, trying again. The Living Bucentaur is taking shape through many hands across the MIT community.

Some glimpses from the collaborative making so far. So much joy!

#inhisownwords - Episode 1 - “Predicting Artificial Intelligence”

In this episode, hear Tambellini express his thoughts on the future of artificial intelligence and its place in society. This excerpt is taken from a panel that Tambellini participated in at the “Cable Television and the Arts” conference held in 1980 in Atlanta, GA.

We spent five hours at the MIT Museum yesterday cutting „lace“ by hand out of Tyvek fabric, tracing oyster shells onto architectural cloth in memory of what once lived on this filled marsh before the MIT campus did. Lace is very slow to make, and that is the point: we think about time by spending it. With blunt scissors and no blades, the work stayed imprecise, and in that slowness people arrived, stayed, and connected, some meeting for the first time after years in the same school. Making the task inefficient made more room for one another. The flat sheet gradually became three-dimensional and alive. These cloths will become part of the procession costumes for SA+P’s move to the Met on September 8. The workshop at the museum was part of Time Without Clocks programme, curated by artist Helga Schmid.

For Mehves Lelic (@mehveslelic), photography has never been about choosing between opposites. It is about learning to inhabit the space between them.

A lens-based artist, curator, and educator, Lelic joined SA+P as head of exhibitions and public programming for the MET Commons — a shared public space for exhibitions, installations, events, activations, teaching, gathering, critique, and informal exchange within the forthcoming Metropolitan Storage Warehouse (the MET).

Lelic is also lecturer in MIT's Art, Culture, and Technology program (@actmit) bringing a practice shaped by questions of belonging and displacement, gratitude and grief, illness and healing. Raised in Istanbul, a city she describes as full of contrasts, she first turned to the camera as a teenager as a way to articulate the tensions around her. That impulse has remained central ever since.

Her work has taken her from documentary assignments for National Geographic (@natgeo) documenting Bektashi communities in Eastern Europe, to layered photographic composites created with immigrant communities on Maryland's Eastern Shore for a Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art commission, to experimental materials drawn from her own experience navigating genetic illness and treatment. Across these projects, a consistent question emerges: can a photograph hold multiple truths at once?

At ACT, Lelic is looking forward to bringing those questions into the classroom, working with students across disciplines to move from the reflex of image-making into something more intentional. Among the projects she hopes to explore: building cameras from scratch.

"As a maker, I feel like one of the greatest privileges is being able to look closely," she says.
