🎬 Insight from Matthew Lillard, star of the Scream franchise.

He reminds actors that what matters most is what you do between jobs. The downtime is where careers are built or lost. Staying in the work, reading, writing, creating, training, is what keeps you ready for the next opportunity.

The goal is not to wait for the job, but to be prepared when it comes.

🎬 Live from the Hollywood Showcase

At our most recent Hollywood Showcase, our students had the opportunity to ask questions directly to industry guests, including agents, managers, casting directors, and studio executives.

Nelson Paredez, Owner and Manager at ESI Network, shared an optimistic perspective on where the industry is heading.

When an industry changes, new opportunities can come with it.

Rather than focusing only on the challenges facing the entertainment industry, Nelson encouraged actors to think about where the opportunities are and how they can position themselves to take advantage of them.

The question isn't just what's happening in the industry.

It's: How are you going to invest in your own opportunity?

Stay curious. Keep learning. Look for new ways to use your talent. And most importantly, apply yourself.

🎬 We've been working on commercial acting with our Youth and Teen actors at Actor's Edge, and they've been having a lot of fun with it.

Commercial acting is its own skill set, and there's much more to it than simply smiling and talking about a product.

We've been exploring two different types of commercial performance:

Direct sale commercials are more straightforward. The actor speaks directly to the camera, talks about the product, highlights its benefits, and connects directly with the audience.

Indirect sale commercials work differently. The actor doesn't acknowledge the camera at all. They might interact with the product, interact with another person, or simply exist naturally within the world of the commercial while the product becomes part of the story.

The audition process can also look different depending on the type of commercial, so learning both gives our Youth and Teen actors more tools to work with.

And there are plenty of skills hiding inside this kind of work: speaking naturally to camera, reacting without dialogue, using physicality, adjusting your energy, taking direction quickly, making your passion for a product feel believable, and communicating a story in just a few seconds.

Commercial work may only last a few seconds on screen, but there's a lot of acting packed into those seconds.

🎭 After a performance like a Showcase or an audition, it's natural to replay every moment.

Here's a distinction worth holding onto. Casting's intuition, timing, budgets, none of it was ever yours to control. Preparation, your choices, how fully you committed, even the chemistry you build with a scene partner through listening and reacting, that part always was.

It's the same distinction we come back to with students after every audition and every Showcase.

Focus on the things you can control. Then, once it's over, look back. Celebrate what worked. Be honest about what didn't.

Swipe through for where to put your energy, both before and after any important audition or performance.

At 19, Macy Minear had the courage to move to Los Angeles on her own.

She had no acting experience. She just knew she felt a calling and wanted to try.

And she didn’t exactly ease into it. She dove in.

We’ve watched Macy grow into a powerful, dynamic (and sometimes hilarious) actor. She’s incredibly smart about the work, whether she’s breaking down a character, digging into a text, or reflecting on a technique. She asks great questions, thinks deeply, and has a way of articulating what she’s discovering that often gives everyone else in the room something to think about, too.

And she keeps challenging herself.

Macy has already built some wonderful experiences, including appearing on Shrinking on Apple TV+ and earning professional representation, but she never seems interested in simply staying where she’s comfortable.

At our recent Hollywood Showcase, she chose a scene that required her to cry on cue. She could have taken an easier route. Instead, she picked something that scared her a little and trusted herself enough to go for it.

That willingness to keep asking more of herself is one of the things we admire most about Macy.

But if you know her, you also know that she brings so much more than her work into the room.

She is joyful. She celebrates other people. She lifts up the actors around her. She can make a room lighter while still bringing so much thought and depth to the work.

Watching someone take such a big leap at 19 and then continue to grow, challenge herself, and build a life around something she cares about is pretty special.

We’re so proud of Macy and so grateful she’s part of our LA community. We can’t wait to see what she says yes to next. ❤️

🚨 BOOKED IT! 🚨

Big congratulations to Beau Foxx. He's on set for reshoots on the feature film he stars in, releasing around January. He also just booked a national commercial, and a SAG short!

We're so excited for Beau and can't wait to see this work make it to screen.

We'll miss him in class over the next few weeks, and we'll be counting down the days until he's back with us.

The strongest scene work doesn’t happen alone.

A scene partner gives you something to respond to. Their choices affect yours. Their reactions change the moment. And suddenly, you’re not just delivering your lines, you’re actually listening, adapting, and being present.

That’s one of the things we love about training with other actors.

You get to work with people who challenge you, surprise you, push you to make stronger choices, and understand what it means to keep showing up and doing the work.

At Actor’s Edge, we believe that connection is a big part of the craft, both between scene partners and within the community around them.

Because acting may be your individual journey, but you don’t have to train alone.

🎬 The 78th Emmys gave actors a pretty great reminder: there’s more than one way to build a lasting career.

Matthew Rhys made Emmy history this year, winning Lead Actor in a Comedy for Widow’s Bay and Lead Actor in a Limited Series for The Beast in Me. It was the first time a performer had won two lead acting Emmys in the same year.

Then there was Jean Smart.

Her fifth Emmy for Hacks completed an extraordinary run: she became the first performer to win an acting Emmy for every season of a series. Five seasons. Five wins. One character.

Two very different achievements, but both say something important about the craft.

Range matters. So does consistency.

Being able to disappear into completely different characters is one kind of skill. Building a character over years and continuing to find something new in them is another.

And both Matthew Rhys and Jean Smart are reminders that there isn't just one way to grow as an actor or build a career that lasts.

Swipe through to see this year's Emmy winners.
