It’s Virgo season. 🎂

A special happy birthday to @victoria_njideka @actsodc committee member, coach and @nationalactso alum. Victoria is multi-talented and gives her time and energy to support our youth. Whether she’s hitting balls on the tennis court or breaking a leg on stage, her smile radiates any space.

Join us in wishing a happy birthday to our longtime ACT-SO committee member, former chair and current advisor , Ms. Ruby Lewis!

Known affectionately as Ms. Ruby to many of us, she is a mentor, advocate, friend, and prayer warrior to many. Throughout the years she has been a tireless and dedicated servant to both the @dcnaacp branch and to the Washington DC ACT-SO program. Thank you for your unwavering support, commitment and investment in our youth and Black community.

As you celebrate this milestone birthday, know that you are loved, cherished and deeply appreciated by your NAACP and ACT-SO family. We hope that this new rotation brings you joy, continued pursuit of your passions and abounding peace. We love you @rlewis8460

Cheers to continued greatness. Let’s show her some love to today.

Happy Monday!

Walking into the week full of creativity with Chicago still on our mind.

Such a fun impromptu and iconic moment in the streets of Chicago. After a full day of competition, ACT-SO DC students recreated the epic Beatles album cover for Abbey Road.

As you walk into this week, allow yourself to pause for unplanned moments and impromptu JOY. Life moves fast-take the time to slow down, breathe and touch grass.

Be Great!

Black boys deserve to grow old.

Today during the @naacp convention the parents of Nolan Wells stood with @naacp president @derricknaacp Johnson and attorney @attorneycrump to share preliminary findings from the autopsy of Nolan Xavier Wells.

During the @nationalactso awards ceremony we watched a poignant piece choreographed by @anthonyburrell This piece was a reminder of the litany of ancestors that Nolan Wells joins. Stolen.

Whose names we call during libations.

Whose stories leave us asking why?

Whose legacies we collectively shoulder.

ACT-SO is the prayer that reminds OUR youth, OUR Black boys-we see the light YOU carry.

We hold space for your creativity.

We nurture your brilliance.

We love on you with intention.

We will forever fight for your tomorrows.

Black boys deserve to grow old.

We’re comin in hot! 🔥Been in the lab working!!

Coaching sessions are a huge component of our preparations for the ACT-SO National competition.

The Gold Standard-Mastering Stage Presence focused on building confidence, body language, improv and owning the power of your own energy.

Our guest speaker @victoria_njideka is a former ACT-SO national competitor and silver medalist in dramatics. She is an accomplished educator, facilitator, director, actress and the founder of @vlistproductions Through interactive activities, her session pushed students to tap into their own confidence and energy to shine.

Sharing a few gems from her session:

💎 Confidence can be conveyed by your presence alone
💎 Use the power of silence to build connection
💎 Practice in front a mirror and record yourself
💎 Grounding breeds preparation
💎Diction is Done with the Tip of the Tongue and Your Teeth

Support our team as we head to nationals. Check out the last slide or our linktree for ways to give.

ACT-SO in Motion.

We are so proud of @actsodc alum Aria Jackson ( @itsariajackson ) on the debut of her first book of poetry-From Here to There. Aria travelled with the Washington DC ACT-SO team three times to the national competitions in Cincinnati, OH, Baltimore, MD and San Antonio, TX competing in Poetry Performance and Oratory. In 2018 Aria and 20 other ACT-SO students were chosen to participate in a week long Arts and Entertainment Intensive in Hollywood, CA. During the intensive students participated in master classes with industry professionals and attended the NAACP Image Awards.

Aria graduated from Loyola Univeristy in New Orleans with a major in Theater studies and minor in Women’s Studies. With over 12 productions under her belt, Aria now calls New Orleans home where she has built a career as an actress, model and writer. She is living in her gifts and talents out loud.
