It was so good to connect and geek out with fellow kidlit creators at the Rutgers University Council on Children’s Literature Conference this weekend! ✨📓 My editor mentor from Scholastic was amazing, and all the industry mentors I chatted with during the day were friendly and encouraging and so passionate about making awesome books for kids! I have a lot of writing to do over the next couple of months but I’m going into it feeling more energized than I have in a while! Thank you #RUCCL ! by @acurleywrites

My fall bookish nails for the Rutgers University Council on Children’s Literature Conference! ✨🍁📓🎃 I’m bringing those cute cat binder clips, too. If you see me, say hi and I’ll be happy to share! #RUCCL by @acurleywrites

Reviewing books with cats in them! 😺📚✨
Middle Grade Title: Land of the Last Wild Cat by Lui Sit, illustrated by David Dean
Published May 2025 (the sequel is out Nov 2026!)
Janey’s rating: 3 out of 4 toe beans

🐾 We enjoyed the magic, the fast-paced adventure, and the animal advocacy, but we left wanting a bit more. Spoilers below! 🐾 Have you read it? What did you think?

😻 First thing is first! The cover is gorgeous! It drew us in right away.
😻We love a legendary magical cat and enjoyed the mystery surrounding the Kuri.
😻 We LOVED the animal advocacy, especially how the author didn’t shy away from the reality of how animals are exploited, used, and endangered. We were proud to have a hero like Puffin standing up and fighting for animals, even when it was hard and against family! Puffin is a brave character to cheer for!
😾 Based on the cover, we were hoping for more jungle like adventure (or more time spent exploring the actual land of the wild cat).
😾 Puffin’s bestie felt a little flat to us and we wish he had more agency/arc. We love a sidekick who can help save the day but we love them to be full characters, too! by @acurleywrites

Pumpkins, gourds… nature is so aesthetically pleasing! 😻 by @acurleywrites

The past few months have been a … journey. But along the way, I’ve returned to writing and have found joy again in the creative worlds I had set aside. When we got back from Alaska, this letter was waiting for me. When I applied in July, I had no expectations for whether or not my application would be accepted, I just needed to take a chance and dive back in (thanks @jessica_haster_writes for the nudge💚). I’m so excited to attend the Rutgers University Council on Children’s Literature Conference in October and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with a mentor on a story that refuses to stay quiet. I’m listening and I’m ready!! ✨ #ruccl by @acurleywrites

🚨 Proud book auntie alert! 🚨 My friend @maryzychowicz ‘s debut picture book with illustrator Aline Cardoso Macedo e Silva is out TODAY!! Little Buddy’s story holds such a special place in our critique group’s heart and I am so happy the world gets to experience the love and warmth that flows from Mary’s storytelling. Meet Athrú, my new keyboard buddy. My talented friend Cat (@themossandmushroom ) made him for me, and he’s quite charming as you can see. I’ve had him for a while now but his name alluded me. Today, it all came together. Athrú (Gaelic/Irish) means change, which could extend to verbs like shift and transform. The old saying goes that the only constant in life is change, and little Athrú here reminds me of how powerful we can be when we embrace our own transformation. Also, Athrú is apparently the name of an Irish Whiskey which tracks and is now on my “must find” list.😹 by @acurleywrites
