Gratitude is not a passive response to something we have been given; gratitude arises from paying attention, from being awake in the presence of everything that lives within and without us. —David Whyte taken in Mount Tamalpais State Park by @adalusardi

Because by Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer

So I can’t save the world—

can’t save even myself,

can’t wrap my arms around

every frightened child, can’t

foster peace among nations,

can’t bring love to all who

feel unlovable.

So I practice opening my heart

right here in this room and being gentle

with my insufficiency. I practice

walking down the street heart first.

And if it is insufficient to share love,

I will practice loving anyway.

I want to converse about truth,

about trust. I want to invite compassion

into every interaction.

One willing heart can’t stop a war.

One willing heart can’t feed all the hungry.

And sometimes, daunted by a task too big,

I tell myself what’s the use of trying?

But today, the invitation is clear:

to be ridiculously courageous in love.

To open the heart like a lilac in May,

knowing freeze is possible

and opening anyway.

To take love seriously.

To give love wildly.

To race up to the world

as if I were a puppy,

adoring and unjaded,

stumbling on my own exuberance.

To feel the shock of indifference,

of anger, of cruelty, of fear,

and stay open. To love as if it matters,

as if the world depends on it. taken in Berkeley Yoga Center by @adalusardi

Still Wants to Stay Still
By Colleen Morton Busch

There’s carnage on the walkway, a mass of feathers I step around, a congress of crows in the dying pine.

M at her piano, doubling back until some truce is reached between how it sounds and how she wants it to.

I light incense, a candle, sit until I don’t want to move or subtract a single note.

These white walls have no answer but return the scrum of sound to a plumb and leafy silence.

Still wants to stay still, but we creep toward it
like a dog once kicked.

There, says the mind. And back there.
Here, says the heart, here. by @adalusardi

“A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” ― Albert Einstein taken in East Oakland, CA by @adalusardi

Suzuki Roshi once said during a sesshin,

"Zen is to feel your way along in the dark, not knowing what you will meet, not already knowing what to do. Most of us don't like going slowly, and we would like to think it is possible to figure everything out ahead of time. But if you go too fast, or are not careful enough, you will bump into things. So just feel your way along in the dark, slowly and carefully."

He gestured with his hand out in front of him, feeling this way and that in the empty air.

"When you do things with this spirit, you don't know what the results will be, but because you carefully feel your way along, the results will be okay. You can trust what will happen."

I take my rage to the river.

A heron flies into the wind.

I let myself be opened

by the great gray wings

and the great gray sky

and the great gray largeness of water,

not to rid myself of rage

but to become a clearer channel

to meet the chest-scouring,

scab-clawing, cell-screaming,

throat-burning fury of rage

and remind my heart I can

know all this rage, can be

feral with rage and still

keep on loving the world.

In these remarkably challenging times, it's completely natural to feel turned around—so if you're feeling weighed down by the heaviness of the world, you're definitely not alone! We are all navigating increasing uncertainty, and it's essential to remember that we are in this together.

When you're feeling overwhelmed or disconnected, I encourage you to pause for a few minutes and breathe deeply into your belly. Once your belly begins to soften, breathe deeply and gently into your heart space. Allow each exhalation to be soft and complete, emptying your lungs fully, and softening your heart, all without being forceful. Let each inhale feel nourishing, each exhale settling.

Continue breathing in this way for several minutes, returning to a few natural breaths whenever needed. Allow yourself to reconnect with your inner body and cultivate a grounded presence with the earth and your surroundings. Remember, it's from this place of open-hearted, calm, clear presence that we can truly support one another, and together, foster a world filled with compassion, equity, and love. taken in East Oakland, CA by @adalusardi

To Be Alive

To be alive: not just the carcass
But the spark.
That's crudely put, but...
