Thanks so much to everyone who came out last Friday to @mediasanctuary to share space and vibrations with me. I was so touched by the generosity of your presence and time.

Together, we raised funds for our siblings in Sudan and Palestine. Please scroll through to see the words of Sara @bsonblast about the urgent need for funds to get hygiene kits to women and girls in Sennar, Sudan. There is a goal to raise $2,000 to be able to provide these for them asap. If you have the ability to donate towards this urgent effort then please venmo @bsonblast whatever you can. Sara has been at the forefront of covering and explaining the war and humanitarian crisis in Sudan and helping to make necessary connections for direct aid on the ground.

Half of the funds raised from the show went to @combcutters who @yesfolk will be hosting an additional fundraiser for on Sunday.

Abu Zeyn's Egyptian Spiritual Jazz performance was so incredible to witness. @adam.elabd had the audience in a trance as he used his voice, multiple instruments, looping, and story telling to transport us to a higher place. Our packed house helped to fund support for Palestine and Sudan.

We are thrilled to welcome Abu Zeyn أبو زين for his first show at The Sanctuary. A child of the Nile River and the Arabian Desert, his ears were raised on the sounds of braying donkeys, the call to prayer and tuktuk soundsystems.

In this performance of Egyptian Spiritual Jazz, he will be sharing original hymns inspired by both Sufi and Ancient Egyptian spiritual modalities.

A portion of proceeds from this event will benefit Palestine and Sudan.

Please join me on Oct 9 at @mediasanctuary to hear a collection of compositions that have been brewing in my heart for the past couple years. I’ll be sharing original nasheeds/hymns inspired by Sufi and Ancient Egyptian spiritual teachings. This will be my first time sharing most of these compositions locally and my first full solo set in Troy in over a year. I plan on spending the winter in the studio recording these pieces and would love to share them with you first.

This one-baba-show of Egyptian Spiritual Jazz consists of live loops and mawwal/improvisation using the guitar, bass, clarinet, flutes and singing.

A portion of proceeds with be donated to our siblings in Palestine and Sudan and tickets are sliding scale/pay what you can.

Sometimes it is about the other fungi + microorganisms, the ones that make things go bubbly and effervescent 🙂Learn how local organizers, earth tenders and fermenters Yiyi Medoza @yiyi.mendoza + Adam Elabd @adam.elabd of @yesfolk create some tasty ferments!

Yiyi and Adam are founders of Yesfolk Tonics, a small family-owned brewery and cultural community space that specializes in traditional fermented and functional beverages like kombucha and kombucha vinegar. We use our platform for cultural preservation by centering foodways of diasporic and immigrant communities, the living traditions of herbalism and fermentation, ancestral healing modalities for self and communal care, and folk ritual.

We are excited to taste their ferments and kombucha on site and join their class offering for this Sunday!

Making Herbal Fruit Shrubs is going to be so much fun! Tasty medicine thats easy to make and accessible! Low tech kitchen magic for the win!

I’m so looking forward to playing at this devotional Sufi gathering in the Catskills on August 8-9. Playing at Sema is always a homecoming for me and making vibrations for people to whirl and move and meditate to is really the fullest expression of my musical practice.

I’m bringing some original Sufi spirituals that have been coalescing over the past couple years as well as some devotional hymns in Ancient Egyptian and possibly some new music that is still percolating.

I’m blessed and grateful to be out sharing music several times during my 🎉birth month🎉. It feels like the best birthday present to be able to play music for the community. Here’s what’s to come:

5/7 + 5/29 : 2 showings of 🤖The Golem Trilogy🤖, a stop motion animation by my friend and neighbor @nathan_meltz . It’s a very moving silent film with a live score that I play bass in along with @steevehammond and @oui_was. I’ll also be opening both evenings with a solo set to which I’m bringing a different set of instruments and compositions to each time to keep it exciting for us all.

5/13 + 5/22: I’m very excited to be debuting a new collaborative project with habibi @omaraena . 🌙Nur ala Nur🌙نور على نور🌙 is our blend of live instrumentation and electronic rhythms sprouting from the Sufi spiritual path. Every show will be very different because we will be improvising in the moment for the moment. Come hear the dawn of our nascent sound!💫

6/4-6/7: I’ll be playing a solo set and as Nur ala Nur with @omaraena at @dance.beyond this year. I can’t wait to be in musical and moving communion with this community for the first time!🕺🕺

Excited to debut our newest musical project Nur ala Nur (Light upon Light) at @ecstaticdancenyc on May 13th in Greenpoint Brooklyn.

Nur Ala Nur is a collaboration between Omar Aena عمر عينة and Abu Zeyn أبو زين — an Iraqi and an Egyptian, inheritors of two of the oldest civilizations on earth, converging in sound. Together they weave electronic music, live instrumentation - inspired by the Sufi path and in creating a devotional experience that moves the body and awakens the spirit.

Omar Aena, with roots from Iraq, bridges worlds through electronic production, spoken word and live oud — drawing from years of exploring sacred music across Morocco, Turkey, Cuba, Egypt and beyond.

Abu Zeyn أبو زين, a child of the Nile and the Arabian Desert, layers live bass, guitar, flute, and vocals into soulful improvisations shaped by jazz and the Sufi spiritual tradition.
