valley post is back.

when this place shut down earlier this year, our family felt it. it was one of those rare spots. we can bring the girls, catch a game, eat good food, just be together on a saturday.

so when waldo’s chicken and beer announced they were moving in, i made a promise: week one, we’re there.

promise kept. grand opening week, whole table covered, everybody happy.

waldo’s never misses. if you haven’t been since the reopen, go.

got to spend the day with some of my favorite people from servpro team wilson to celebrate everything they poured into this summer. these are the people who show up every day, do the hard work, and still find a way to make it fun.

if you haven’t tried travelin’ tom’s coffee you’re missing out. grabbed some iced coffees, and just got to be people for a minute. no job sites. no calls. just good coffee and good company. grateful for this team.

first day. two schools. two girls who didn’t look back.

addi grey starts sixth grade today. greysie hollis starts second. and for the first time, they’re doing it separately. different schools. different hallways. different friends. no older sister to check on the younger one. no younger one running up to find her big sister.

emily and i sat with that this morning.

but then they got out of the car. and neither one of them blinked. no hesitation. no looking back. just ready. like they’ve always been.

they have so much of their mom in them. the confidence. the independence. the way they just know who they are without needing anyone to tell them.

there’s a whole part of their lives we’ll never see. and somehow that’s okay. because we already know.

fourth of july at regions field.

first time taking the girls to a barons game on the fourth. corn dogs, fireworks over downtown, and addi getting her first real lesson with the fuji. that part alone made the whole night worth it.

a night i won’t forget.

i have had a tough time finding recipes I really like but the classic ‘89 is becoming one of my favorites. rich colors, deep shadows, strong contrast, but still that timeless film look that makes every shot feel like it was meant to be captured. incredibly versatile whether you’re shooting golden hour or late night under the lights.

the day we rolled into town, this was the first place we saw. we knew right then we had to try it.

nothing beats a good wood fired pizza, and twisted tomato did not disappoint. sat outside, had some apps, a few drinks, and this incredible pizza.

this one’s making the list every time we come back to blue ridge.

the girls had plans. emily had dinner with friends. i had a free night and nowhere to be.

so i grabbed the fuji, drove downtown, put on some music, and just walked.

no shot list. no client. no deadline. just morris avenue and whatever the light was doing.

i’m still pretty new to this fujifilm world. it’s different from everything else i shoot. there’s no brief. nobody waiting on the files. it’s just me slowing down and looking for something worth stopping for.

signage. structure. the way the sun hits a building just right when it finally gets low enough to stop being harsh.

ordinary stuff. the kind of thing you’d walk past without thinking twice.

but frame it right, find the light, and it’s something else entirely.

that’s what i was chasing that night.

addi’s last day of fifth grade.

i keep thinking back to 2021. meet the teacher in a parking lot. a school we barely got to set foot in that first year. emily and i watching her walk down that hallway, so small with that big backpack on, by herself on the first day, not knowing a soul.

she wasn’t scared for a second. we definitely were.

five years later i’m sitting here trying to figure out where it went.

what i didn’t see coming was her heart. the way she genuinely, consistently shows up for people. not because someone told her to. not to be noticed. just because that’s who she is. she sees people and she does something about it.

a lot of who she is today belongs to the teachers and staff at forest oaks. five years of people who poured into her and it shows.

she’s ready for what’s next. more ready than she probably knows.

middle school doesn’t know what’s coming.

there are seasons that push you toward something new without you fully understanding why.

i picked up this camera and started paying attention differently. slowing down. noticing the things most people walk past. a reflection in a puddle. light through oak trees. an empty street at the wrong hour.

it’s become less about the shot and more about the practice of looking.

mimi turns 69 today.

no big venue. no catered spread. just her people and my sister doing what my sister does. homemade gorditas. fresh guac. salsa from scratch. tajin on the watermelon. drinks on the patio.

over the top in the best possible way. because that’s how she shows love too.

and mimi? she just wanted the grandkids around her. that was the whole ask. give her that and she’s good. she’ll tell you so without hesitation.

69 years and she still lights up the same way when they pile in around her.
