There’s an annual phenomenon in these parts that happens just before the first forecasted frost: the scramble to harvest the dahlias. I am lucky to be the recipient of the overflow and have now come to associate cut dahlias with full autumn. Country living, Instapals. And the nightlife!? My grandmother Mabel Viola Taylor Adams’s two drawer oak chest c 1890 held baby clothes for more than two decades but had broken due to years of hard use and international moves. I never met her but feel like she lives on in the heirlooms that made their way to me and my children. My dear friend Roger, who is VP on the board of the Kent Historical Society, used his expertise as a connoisseur of American antiques and restored her for me. So she’ll live on for another generation or two holding linens, many handmade by Mabel, at the Little Easy. So will Roger. Incidentally, the birthing chair belonged to Mary Leona Lavigne McCarroll, my maternal grandmother making my landing a bit of a family reunion in oak. Roger fixed that for me, too; this place holds so much of me and where I come from. This is home. This is where I belong. PS. Roger’s invoice calls for homemade brownies adorned with pecans which my youngest is souping up now.
