Centrals 2025

Long but very fun weekend

Handled 15 athletes (7 of our own)

Managed to snag

1 Gold medal and best masters lifter @bstfit_ (20 kg meet pr) 9/9

@chrisjsadsad 8/9 725kg total
3 comps in 5 months and still managed a silver medal in 93 kg open

A squat and bench pr and a total match with a narrow miss with 317.5 kg

@bentoboxxing unfortunately suffered a shoulder injury one week out but didn't sulk or complain

she lifted what she could and adapted like a true champ

@pdanifit 7/9 First meet together after some time off PL and still managed a Bench pr and narrowly surpassing her total PR in such a short time

@stephearlstrong 8/9 day 10kg pr over band of barbells meet in june and continues to work her way down back to 57kg! all time comp pr is on the horizon

@squato_gelato 7/9 442.5kg total @73kg unfortunate depth call on the 2nd squat made the total lower than what we wanted but we know the strength is there for more and more prs each meet

@adamfkatz 8/9 silver medal in 105kg open 760kg total (20kg total pr)

We've managed to add 62.5kg total increase since we started together for 1.5 yrs which at his level is a massive increase

Remainder of athletes, I do not coach but was able to help out and majority of these lifters hit comp prs and went between 7-8/9 lifts on avg! by @adaptive.sp

Let’s talk training doses

Recently I feel as though athletes are constantly posting the week 4 rpe 10s every block and sorta avoid the process of “base building “ low to moderate rpe work

Key principles of programming entail that over the course of training, volume and intensity are inversely correlated and needs to be followed

Now the degree of change aka the amount of drop in volume and intensity rise will depend on lifter responses

Training blocks should build on each-other and it seems as though athletes are running peaking style block year round

It’s important to note that it is likely not sustainable training since athlete psychology of going heavy block after block just doesn’t make sense

This is where integrating some top down building blocks to gather productive training

Now if we shift to

Traditional Block Periodization has this focus on training phases

With the emergence of more modern strategies (bottom up, and dup/concurrent training)

I find myself implementing a resemblance of top down planning but utilize bottom up strategies with lifter feedback to change things ongoing and develop a good training history with my athletes (aka determine progression schemes and block length, time to peak etc)

The goal of this post is programming strategies (top down and bottom up are tools 🧰) by @adaptive.sp

Longevity and success in any career boils down to being process oriented

You only learn this when you are forced too

And at that crossroads, how you react or adapt will likely determine how far you will go in sport and in life by @adaptive.sp

Athlete Highlights

@hanrahandeadliftman taking 2.5 kg above his comp max for an easy double

Hoping to break into the 230+ kg mark this month

@ch.dg hitting her comp max for a 2x2 tempo bench press, the red plate will be calling her name next yr‼️

@_amar.105_ hitting a huge double pr with 240 kg , hoping to hit the elusive 265 kg or 6 plate squat in November

@kieransbd 5 weeks in together and we have managed multiple rep prs including a atpr 143 kg with room

We hope to hit another total pr from centrals give a very short turnaround since starting together in September by @adaptive.sp

We are in the big 2026 and people still think rpe or rir training is for pussies lol

You know what’s more sad, basing loads on the bar relative to one data point that was done on one singular day

yes if you use rpe or rir with poor intent and you actively try then sure but for the most part I personally want to maximize my weight on the bar if im training with rpe , its like using velocity and purposely moving slow so that I don’t get to load heavy weights on the bar by @adaptive.sp

Tired of working out for 3 hours every session

There is a better way, might involve limited yapping 🗣️

Obviously if you have time to do 2-3 hr sessions and you enjoy it go off

But so many lifters will say powerlifting workouts takes too long and thats just not true

And if these rest times feel too short, you likely have bigger problems i.e might be a good time to work on conditioning by @adaptive.sp

Got asked a question from my client

“Should you pull back on accessories so that the week 4 or end of block shows up better?”

My answer was a 90% of the time no but understanding when its appropriate to do so depends on what you are trying to get out of it

In most cases the only time to pullback on accessories is in the final 2 weeks of a meet prep and even then its just a subtle decrease in intensity more so with lower body specific accessories

Not every block is meant to display or express

This is something that in the past periodization models did well with regards to a focus on building strength and expressing it at a specific time period

Diminishing or down playing someone’s difficult period in their PL career isn’t helpful nor is it conducive to helping them get past their struggles

Communicate and listen to understand

Your version of difficult will be purely based on what you have experienced in your past history

We talk all the time of oh its not that bad, I’ve had it worse

While that may be true , it’s just not all that conducive in helping someone get passed their challenges by @adaptive.sp

Meet Preparation

To prepare you to display your strength on a given day

I see it time and time again

Lifters hit their rpe 10 1 week out and think the taper will suddenly give them this massive boost

(sometimes it works but other times it falls very short)

A thought experiment I do have is after your end of the block you hit rpe 9-9.5

How does your week 1 usually feel?

Oftentimes, you feel pretty fatigued and sluggish

It is important to trust your plan and process without needing to hit "x" training total in the gym to prove you can do it on the platform

Save this post for your final block of peaking and remind yourself that you do not need to red line before comp to feel ready by @adaptive.sp
