OPA Provs 2026

Thank you @bandofbarbells for hosting an incredible event! As someone who has only helped run the odd local meet, I can’t imagine how much work goes into these events!

Overall, team did well, hit some prs, learned some lessons

This is my 11th year in the sport and 7th year of coaching I believe

And to be honest the more I reflect on every major meet the more I realize how much more improvement needs to be done to ensure my people show up at their best

Stoked to have won best team but I know we have so much more to show in future comps!

Shoutout to the squad who represented us so well

With Nationals this week coming up (despite not competing this year)

Been thinking… damn its been 10 yrs since I competed at my first one

Feel like a lot of recent people have only seen the “coach/education” side of this account

I began powerlifting from playing competitive sports prior (volleyball and soccer)

The gym quickly became my next obsession

Once I began university, I ended joining the @brockbarbell club in 2015 and over the years just kept lifting , learning (applying both my exercise science/kin degree)

Eventually when new members joined and began coaching in 2017 with a handful of ppl to help out with their PL journeys (this was very much free and volunteering essentially)

Throughout undergrad, I just learned and dabbled into s&c internship, worked in multiple labs with zero real direction

Fast forward to 2020 I got into my masters program where I thought Academia was the next step for me (eventually get a PhD and some type of job in science field)

As I had more years on my belt and some success with clients competing at nationals and world championships

I thought to myself, maybe this could be a job?

Maybe Im delusional but hey why not give it try

And in 2022 after 7 years in the sport, I finally felt comfortable sharing knowledge and trying to grow my roster actively

By the time 2023 came around I had a full client roster and indeed left academia to pursue essentially a “hobby job” full time

What my goal of this post is to let some of my recent followers over the past few years understand a bit more of my journey to where I am

In addition, learn to chase your interests, chase experiences and go with the flow (there’s no fast way to get into coaching)

You gotta earn the experience, prove yourself over a decade like any other career

And to this day, there is sooooo much more to learn and grow which is what makes this path im on fun, difficult, and rewarding by @ian_adaptive.sp

How to “body recomp as an intermediate to advanced lifter”

For beginners, these are prime years of growth so unless you needing to lose bf id likely just a run generational slow bulk for the first 3-4 years lol by @ian_adaptive.sp

Longevity and success in any career boils down to being process oriented

You only learn this when you are forced too

And at that crossroads, how you react or adapt will likely determine how far you will go in sport and in life by @ian_adaptive.sp

Athlete Highlights

@hanrahandeadliftman taking 2.5 kg above his comp max for an easy double

Hoping to break into the 230+ kg mark this month

@ch.dg hitting her comp max for a 2x2 tempo bench press, the red plate will be calling her name next yr‼️

@_amar.105_ hitting a huge double pr with 240 kg , hoping to hit the elusive 265 kg or 6 plate squat in November

@kieransbd 5 weeks in together and we have managed multiple rep prs including a atpr 143 kg with room

We hope to hit another total pr from centrals give a very short turnaround since starting together in September by @ian_adaptive.sp

We are in the big 2026 and people still think rpe or rir training is for pussies lol

You know what’s more sad, basing loads on the bar relative to one data point that was done on one singular day

yes if you use rpe or rir with poor intent and you actively try then sure but for the most part I personally want to maximize my weight on the bar if im training with rpe , its like using velocity and purposely moving slow so that I don’t get to load heavy weights on the bar by @ian_adaptive.sp

Tired of working out for 3 hours every session

There is a better way, might involve limited yapping 🗣️

Obviously if you have time to do 2-3 hr sessions and you enjoy it go off

But so many lifters will say powerlifting workouts takes too long and thats just not true

And if these rest times feel too short, you likely have bigger problems i.e might be a good time to work on conditioning by @ian_adaptive.sp

Got asked a question from my client

“Should you pull back on accessories so that the week 4 or end of block shows up better?”

My answer was a 90% of the time no but understanding when its appropriate to do so depends on what you are trying to get out of it

In most cases the only time to pullback on accessories is in the final 2 weeks of a meet prep and even then its just a subtle decrease in intensity more so with lower body specific accessories

Not every block is meant to display or express

This is something that in the past periodization models did well with regards to a focus on building strength and expressing it at a specific time period
