ādara® - Our Strongest Fiber, Reimagined.
The new keratin protein fiber by @humanmaterialloop
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
What happens when a material becomes the starting point of a design?

Upholstery is often permanently attached through layers, adhesives, and fixings.

With Chair Nr.1, Roger Haan reverses this approach. Rather than adapting the material to a predetermined form, he develops the chair around a single piece of ādara® Felt, allowing the material itself to guide the design.

A distinct look for a remarkable material.

Rather than designing a form first and covering it afterwards, Roger Haan let the textile lead. Its behavior, its construction, and its possibilities shaped the chair from the start.

The result is a chair where material and form aren’t separate steps. They’re one idea, developed together.

The name lilac comes from the flower of the same name, whose color ranges from pale lavender to deeper shades of violet. Yet, the color itself occupies an interesting space between the familiar and the unexpected.

Lilac belongs to the broader family of purples, colors that emerge from our perception of red and blue light. Unlike many colors strongly associated with a single element in nature, lilac has no singular visual reference. It can evoke flowers, twilight, or mineral surfaces, depending on its shade and context.

Historically, purple pigments and dyes were often costly to produce, with some derived from rare sources such as sea snails. Although lilac is now easily reproduced, it retains associations with delicacy, rarity, and individuality. Its meaning, however, is never fixed.

In design, lilac can soften the appearance of a material without changing its physical properties, or introduce an unexpected quality to a familiar form. It can feel restrained or expressive, contemporary or nostalgic, depending on what surrounds it.

Perhaps this is what makes lilac so interesting: a color does not need a single, recognizable association to have a distinct identity. Sometimes, its strength lies precisely in the space between different interpretations.

Since 2009,@wandschappen has reimagined the familiar houseplant in wool felt, exploring the quiet ways we make a place our own.

After more than fifteen years, the Felt Plant Series takes a new direction, opening up fresh possibilities in texture, touch, and material expression.

A collaboration between an established practice and a new material.

Green is one of the most abundant colors in nature, yet its appearance is more complex than it might seem.

Its presence in plants comes largely from chlorophyll, a pigment that absorbs red and blue light more strongly than green, reflecting the wavelengths we perceive as green. What we see is therefore not simply a property of a leaf, but the result of an interaction between matter, light, and the human eye.

Green also occupies a particularly sensitive region of human vision, allowing us to distinguish subtle variations in its shades. Yet reproducing green has historically presented its own challenges. Some brilliant synthetic greens developed in the 19th century contained arsenic, turning a color associated with life and vitality into a potentially toxic substance.

A color so closely associated with nature can be produced through entirely artificial means, while naturally derived materials do not necessarily appear green. Its symbolism is therefore shaped not only by its material origins, but by perception and cultural interpretation.

Green can suggest growth without movement, freshness without novelty, and ecological responsibility without offering any evidence of it. Perhaps this is what makes the color so fascinating: it demonstrates how easily we assign meaning to appearances, and how little a color alone can tell us about the material reality behind it.

From rough sketch to finished work.

Roger (@zachtezaken) was drawn to ādara® the first time he encountered it. What began as an interest in the material became the starting point for a new design.

Rather than starting with a shape and then choosing a material, Roger let ādara® Felt lead the way. Its behavior, construction, and tension informed the form of Chair Nr. 1.

Experience Chair Nr. 1 in ādara® Felt during @dutchdesignweek at @klokgebouw (Hall 3), October 17–25.

Acoustic design is spatial design.

A hair salon in London’s Borough is an unlikely listening room. @saltsalonlondon combines angled walls, foam furniture, suspended silicone panels, and a soundwall built from salvaged metal, so acoustic design shapes the space from the start rather than being bolted on at the end.

The lesson reaches well beyond hairdressing, into offices and every interior where people need both connection and concentration.

New article by our colleague, Máté, on acoustic design, materials, and spatial experience is now in our journal. Link in bio.
