Roger Haan @zachtezaken | No. 1 Chair with @adaradesign

What happens when the material determines the design, rather than the other way around?

Dutch designer and upholsterer Roger Haan explores this question through the No. 1 Chair, developed using ādara® Felt, a new keratin protein textile material created by @humanmaterialloop from regenerated human hair.

Rather than designing a chair and selecting a textile to cover it, Haan began with the material itself. Its behaviour, structural properties, and possibilities for tension became the starting point for the furniture's construction.

The textile can be removed without destroying the frame, allowing individual components to be repaired, replaced, or separated for recycling.

Haan's approach comes from his experience in furniture restoration and upholstery. By taking furniture apart, studying its hidden structures, and understanding traditional construction techniques, he questions which elements are actually necessary.

The No. 1 Chair demonstrates how material innovation can influence not only the appearance of furniture but also the way it is constructed, maintained, and eventually disassembled.
For ādara®, the collaboration marks an important step from material development into functional furniture, allowing a new textile to establish its own design language.

Presented at Dutch Design Week 2026, the chair is available in different colours and configurations, including an armchair, love seat, and extended seating system.

Made from keratin, ādara® is our first commercial material – a raw material that’s abundant, regenerative, and not subject to the supply volatility natural fibers usually face. For our partners, that means a steady supply, not just a good story.

For technical data sheets and sample orders – get in touch.

Meet your next Sustainability & Climate Tech investments🌱

On 22 April, we're giving impact-driven investors the chance to discover nine women-led, EU-based innovators in a session of curated pitches and engaging expert-led Q&As.

After a competitive selection process, we’re ready to announce the final line-up:

🔹 Afterwind is recycling glass fibre assets, starting with wind turbine blades, and turning them into high-performance secondary materials.

🔹 BMTA&C Energy combines advanced hardware, solar optimization, and intelligent energy software to deliver off-grid and hybrid cold storage at industrial scale.

🔹 Eolic Wall is decentralizing access to wind energy for industrial, commercial, and residential sites, making it as accessible and scalable as solar panels.

🔹 Human Material Loop provides an ethical, sustainable alternative to oil-based and animal fibres with ādara®, a strong protein-based textile fibre derived from keratin waste.

🔹 LAM'ON® Compostable Films manufactures compostable packaging films that allow brands to replace plastic without changing their production lines.

🔹 MacroCarbon produces carbon-negative Sustainable Aviation Fuel from oceanic seaweed.

🔹Recycllux’s AI platform leverages satellite data and blockchain to detect plastic accumulation and orchestrate marine plastic cleanups.

🔹Swedish Algae Factory AB is replacing harmful and less efficient chemicals in beauty products, wound care, membranes, solar cells and batteries with algae-based advanced materials.

🔹Thirty2 replaces petrochemical dyes with bio-produced alternatives, starting with indigo for the denim industry.

Organized with the support of Impact Europe, this matchmaking session will spotlight the women-led companies tackling critical sustainability challenges and advancing the green transition. Attending investors will be able to book follow-up meetings through a dedicated form and explore opportunities to back these innovators.

Alumna of the Impact Hub incubator. Winner of the EU Distributed Design Award. Dutch Design Awards nominee. Dezeen award shortlisted, published author.

What should the Netherlands do to make startups more successful?

"Innovation requires courage and real risk. The Netherlands must choose to be bold today or risk being left behind. Discomfort is a sign of progress."

Van grondstof tot garen, maar dan anders.

Van haar naar stof.
Van idee naar impact.

@humanmaterialloop gaf een workshop waarin circulariteit en de ambacht van het ‘maken’ tastbaar werd.
