What can a landscape tell us about the life it supports?

The next course in ERA’s Learn with the Land series takes us to the Thar Desert, hosted by Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park in Jodhpur.

Over four days, participants will learn to read landscapes, understand reference ecosystems, identify plants and document plant communities. From decoding soils and geology to exploring plant-animal interactions and collecting seeds, the course offers a closer look at what it takes to understand an ecosystem before restoring it.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan
19–22 November 2026
Limited to 14 participants

Is an Indian tree necessarily native to every part of India?

We often use the term ‘native’ to describe plants that belong to a place. But what does that actually mean? And how do we know if a plant is native to a particular landscape?

Our second Roots of Restoration Primer explores these questions, looking at why the local ecology matters, why the distinction can be tricky, and how even a plant that seems perfectly at home may have been introduced from elsewhere.

Can a plant be invasive in one place, but not another?

We often hear about invasive plants as something that needs to be removed. But what actually makes a plant invasive? And why do some plants become a problem when they move outside their native range?

Our first Roots of Restoration Primer looks at these questions, with examples like Lantana, Neltuma and surprisingly, neem.

There’s a lot to understand when it comes to ecological restoration - from native species and invasive plants to succession, grasslands, biocrusts and much more.

As part of @era.india ’s work to make restoration more accessible, we’re putting together a series of short primers exploring some of these ideas and concepts.

Roots of Restoration is a growing collection of these resources.
We’ll be sharing them here over the coming weeks! by @adavitrust

Ecological Restoration Course | Green Hub Fellowship Batch 10

The ERA Film Desk (Green Hub) and the Education & Capacity Building Desk (Adavi Trust) organised a three-day introductory course on ecological restoration for the current batch of Green Hub fellows. Through expert talks, field visits, hands-on activities, and films, the course introduced fellows to the science and practice of ecological restoration.

The first day focused on understanding ecology and ecosystems. Sessions by Dr. Aparajita Datta @aparajita_datta and Dr. Alolika Sinha @alolikasinha explored biodiversity, rainforest and grassland ecosystems, and restoration practices. A field visit to Bamuni Hills with Jeeb Das connected ecological observations with the cultural history of the landscape, followed by tree identification, GPS mapping, and a screening of Grassleela – Roots of the Mind.

On the second day, fellows learned restoration principles, native species, community-led conservation, and sustainable livelihoods through sessions by Dr. Aparajita Datta, Dr. Abba Pulu, and Dr. Alolika Sinha. A field visit to Dhekiajuli offered insights into agroforestry, invasive species management, and forest restoration practices where some areas are set aside for biodiversity and restoration on a tea estate.

The final day took fellows to restoration sites in Seijosa and nearby areas where they learned nursery management, seed collection, planting techniques, species identification, and long-term ecological monitoring with the Nature Conservation Foundation team. Each fellow planted a native sapling, gaining firsthand experience of the care, patience, and commitment that ecological restoration demands. by @adavitrust

Our repository of restoration and allied professionals has references for over 12 states and is steadily growing.

In collaboration with the Ecological Restoration Alliance and the Adavi Trust, we’re building a crowdsourced database of service providers across the country to make access to action easier for different groups of people - private land owners, educators, govt officials, organisations, etc.

Access to the right resources and people can make all the difference for someone beginning or moving ahead on their restoration journey, and consequently the future of our landscapes.

Calling field biologists, ecologists, native species nursery owners, landscape architects, artists, nature communicators, and anyone working in restoration and allied spaces!

Visit www.untoldearth.org/services to fill the form and contribute to the list.

For any queries, write to us at untoldearthorg@gmail.com

This is our attempt at highlighting the diversity of our network, and inviting more people into the conversations around our ecosystems. by @adavitrust
