Look closely. There’s more to a place than meets the eye.

When we pay attention to the places around us, we begin to notice what is there, what is changing and what people who know these places can tell us.

This Wildlife Week, we’re looking at how Palluyir Trust, Hume Centre, Dakshin Foundation and School of Ecological Nurturance help people observe, understand and care for the living world in different ways.

In Marathi, Vaphasa (वाफसा) describes a very specific moment in the soil - not wet, not dry, but perfectly balanced to hold a seed and let its roots take.

Farmers don't rush this but instead they wait; sowing too early or too late into soil that isn't ready wastes the seed.

Much of what our ecosystem does works the same way - not the sowing itself, but the patient work of getting the soil right: building partnerships, listening to communities, supporting local leadership, so that when the moment comes, people, place, and nature can actually take root.

July’s work follows that similar process of cultivation. As relationships are built and ideas take shape, the foundations are strengthening for what can grow next.

This month’s digest brings together updates from the Rainmatter Foundation team, our partner ecosystem, and the fellowships we support.

Almost a year ago, the restoration community gathered in Guwahati for Restoring Natural Ecologies 2025—three days of conversations, learning, listening, and connection across landscapes, disciplines, and communities.

This film captures a few glimpses of the people, ideas, and moments that shaped the gathering. If you couldn’t join us, we hope it gives you a small slice of the experience. And if you were there, we hope it brings back a few memories. 💚

Over the coming weeks, we’ll also be sharing recordings of our keynote talks on YouTube, so stay tuned for more reflections and conversations from RNE 2025.

As the mist floated in and out, 23 budding filmmakers from across the Western Himalayas spent their days witnessing the mountains awash and alive with the monsoon. Time was spent finding new ways of seeing and hearing the forest, observing life and understanding relationships. This grew a deep appreciation for its interconnectedness, complexities and multitudes.

On the field, we visited community-led restoration sites, spoke with Panchayat leaders, and witnessed the wildlife and ecology of the landscape in many avatars. Several stories and questions surfaced, leading to an inquiry into the different perspectives and realities of the forest and its keepers. Through new lenses, we built narratives around soil and its people, butterflies, honeybees, the wind, forests and their trees.

Ecological Restoration Course | Green Hub Fellowship Batch 10

The ERA Film Desk (Green Hub) and the Education & Capacity Building Desk (Adavi Trust) organised a three-day introductory course on ecological restoration for the current batch of Green Hub fellows. Through expert talks, field visits, hands-on activities, and films, the course introduced fellows to the science and practice of ecological restoration.

The first day focused on understanding ecology and ecosystems. Sessions by Dr. Aparajita Datta @aparajita_datta and Dr. Alolika Sinha @alolikasinha explored biodiversity, rainforest and grassland ecosystems, and restoration practices. A field visit to Bamuni Hills with Jeeb Das connected ecological observations with the cultural history of the landscape, followed by tree identification, GPS mapping, and a screening of Grassleela – Roots of the Mind.

On the second day, fellows learned restoration principles, native species, community-led conservation, and sustainable livelihoods through sessions by Dr. Aparajita Datta, Dr. Abba Pulu, and Dr. Alolika Sinha. A field visit to Dhekiajuli offered insights into agroforestry, invasive species management, and forest restoration practices where some areas are set aside for biodiversity and restoration on a tea estate.

The final day took fellows to restoration sites in Seijosa and nearby areas where they learned nursery management, seed collection, planting techniques, species identification, and long-term ecological monitoring with the Nature Conservation Foundation team. Each fellow planted a native sapling, gaining firsthand experience of the care, patience, and commitment that ecological restoration demands.

Our repository of restoration and allied professionals has references for over 12 states and is steadily growing.

In collaboration with the Ecological Restoration Alliance and the Adavi Trust, we’re building a crowdsourced database of service providers across the country to make access to action easier for different groups of people - private land owners, educators, govt officials, organisations, etc.

Access to the right resources and people can make all the difference for someone beginning or moving ahead on their restoration journey, and consequently the future of our landscapes.

Calling field biologists, ecologists, native species nursery owners, landscape architects, artists, nature communicators, and anyone working in restoration and allied spaces!

Visit www.untoldearth.org/services to fill the form and contribute to the list.

For any queries, write to us at untoldearthorg@gmail.com

This is our attempt at highlighting the diversity of our network, and inviting more people into the conversations around our ecosystems.
