Thanks to @bristol247 for this deep dive on digital advertising in Bristol.

We're proud that our campaigning has stopped many more digital billboards and ad screens appearing across Bristol, but the number of planning applications keeps rising year after year.

Outdoor advertising degrades our public spaces and their unique, historical character. They advertise massive global corporations that siphon money out of the local economy. And they look 💩

Want to help us block more billboards? Follow us to hear about events and meetings 🙌

Ads for SUVs, and fossil-fueled cars, will no longer be allowed on council-owned advertising spaces like bus shelters or billboards ❤️

SUVs are often sold on the promise of adventure. But the reality is that most are used for school runs and supermarket trips. SUVs are significantly more dangerous to other road users, with children most at risk.

Fossil fuel cars pollute the air around us and are being phased out through government legislations. Continuing to advertise them is a massive barrier to greener travel, cleaner air and healthier cities.

It's great to see Bristol Council taking action to remove these kinds of adverts from our streets.

Ads for vapes and nicotine pouches are an increasingly common sight in Bristol as these products become more and more popular.

But under Bristol’s new advertising rules, ads like this one will no longer be allowed on council-owned ad sites.

Specifically, ads for ‘tobacco products or substitute tobacco products, or depictions that represent or imply affiliation or association with the tobacco industry’ will not be permitted.

Whilst vapes may be a good alternative to smoking, or an aid to quitting, the reality is that most vapes and nicotine products are not being sold in this way. In fact, increasing numbers of children are accessing nicotine thanks to these products, which are often advertised and packaged in ways that are designed to appeal to children.

An “Alfabar” vape ad in Bristol was banned by the regulator in 2024 because it appealed to children. Now, thanks to Bristol council’s new Advertising and Sponsorship policy, ads like this won’t appear again on council-owned advertising spaces.

The Shell billboard ad in this picture appeared in Bristol in 2023. It was later banned by the ad regulator for being misleading about Shell’s green investments.

Our city’s streets shouldn’t be a billboard for major polluters to push their greenwash adverts. Bristol City Council has now approved a policy to ban this kind of fossil fuel advertising from appearing again on council-owned sites like bus shelters.

The policy bans ‘Promotion of firms and associated sub-brands or lobbying organisations that extract,
refine, produce, supply, distribute or sell any fossil fuels’.

Bristol joins councils in Sheffield, Edinburgh and many more in restricting fossil fuel advertising 👏👏

What if every city stopped advertising pollution?

From fast fashion to high-carbon products, advertising shapes what we see, what we normalise, and ultimately the choices we’re encouraged to make.

Bristol has already taken action, banning advertising for high-carbon products and becoming the first council to restrict fast-fashion advertising.

We want to live in a city with healthier neighbourhoods, cleaner air, a stronger local economy, and action on the climate crisis.

With droughts, wildfires and extreme weather showing us the consequences of a changing climate, the question is simple:

What could we change next?

The UK banned tobacco advertising because we realised it was totally counterproductive to allow companies to advertise products that are killing us, undermining important public health work.

The same is true of high carbon products and services, fast-fashion, gambling, etc.

Where Bristol (and, to be fair, a bunch of other cities) leads, the UK could follow...

After years of tireless campaigning by Adfree Cities, Adblock Bristol and Carla Denyer, Bristol City Council have officially passed a fossil fuel advertising ban. 🥳

Bristol is following in the footsteps of other cities across the UK and Europe that are refusing to allow the industries that harm public health to use public space to normalise their products and services.

Pressure continues to mount on national government to show climate leadership with a national fossil ad ban.

Help make that happen by joining the campaign 👉 badverts.org

Bristol becomes the first UK council to ban fast fashion ads on council-owned sites 💕💚

The ban comes as part of a wider policy targeting high carbon advertising in the city. Adverts for fossil fuels, SUVs, petrol and diesel cars, flights and cruises are also banned.

Adfree Cities' Co-director Nicola Wilks said: "As a Bristol resident who cares deeply about climate change and air pollution, I am proud that Bristol has gone even further than other UK councils in curbing polluting ads. It feels like common sense."

Anna Bryher, Policy Lead behind Labour Behind the Label, said: "Advertising accelerates ultra-fast cycles of clothing, with increased emissions, excessive water use and poor working conditions for garment workers."

20 other UK councils have introduced restrictions on high carbon advertising. Many other towns and cities around the world are doing the same, including Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Florence.
