It's such a privilege to bring this piece, at billboard scale, to a while different audience. Thank you so much @adblockbristol for the space!

'Globular Lifts The Curse of The Grey Goo Assimilator' was designed as album art, and as a commission it is unusually positive compared to my recent work. A focus on beating the machine, rather than a warning if the terrible things which could come, was a welcome change in focus.

This was mostly made using traditional collage technique, with paper, scissors,a scalpel, a photocopier and pva. The colours I made using spray paint and a few stencil textures, and then added them in digitally.

The Berg Arts Board is a lush intervention in the streetscape. Adblock's blocking work has kept so many horrendous ads off Bristol's streets, and this billboard, abandoned by the industry and reclaimed by the community, stands in stark contrast. The advertising industry is one of the heralds of the Grey Goo Assimilators, and this project showcases the work of artists and campaigns fighting to lift the curse ✊

What if every city stopped advertising pollution?

From fast fashion to high-carbon products, advertising shapes what we see, what we normalise, and ultimately the choices we’re encouraged to make.

Bristol has already taken action, banning advertising for high-carbon products and becoming the first council to restrict fast-fashion advertising.

We want to live in a city with healthier neighbourhoods, cleaner air, a stronger local economy, and action on the climate crisis.

With droughts, wildfires and extreme weather showing us the consequences of a changing climate, the question is simple:

What could we change next?

The UK banned tobacco advertising because we realised it was totally counterproductive to allow companies to advertise products that are killing us, undermining important public health work.

The same is true of high carbon products and services, fast-fashion, gambling, etc.

Where Bristol (and, to be fair, a bunch of other cities) leads, the UK could follow...

Bristol becomes the first UK council to ban fast fashion ads on council-owned sites 💕💚

The ban comes as part of a wider policy targeting high carbon advertising in the city. Adverts for fossil fuels, SUVs, petrol and diesel cars, flights and cruises are also banned.

Adfree Cities' Co-director Nicola Wilks said: "As a Bristol resident who cares deeply about climate change and air pollution, I am proud that Bristol has gone even further than other UK councils in curbing polluting ads. It feels like common sense."

Anna Bryher, Policy Lead behind Labour Behind the Label, said: "Advertising accelerates ultra-fast cycles of clothing, with increased emissions, excessive water use and poor working conditions for garment workers."

20 other UK councils have introduced restrictions on high carbon advertising. Many other towns and cities around the world are doing the same, including Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Florence.
