Did you know Aviva insures the training of #ICE agents? People in Norwich have been putting up ads today, created using artwork from @misterjesseduquette and @rebeccacohen__, to call out Aviva and Serco for their complicity in migrant abuse and genocide.

Aviva is the biggest insurer of migrant detention and abuse, but in 3 months their contract is up with Serco - so now is the time to ramp up the pressure - LINK IN COMMENTS...

🔎 Insures the largest number of migrant detention & surveillance contractors, including Serco and Mears, who run all the detention centres in the UK.

🔎 Serco designed the training curriculum for US immigration enforcement (ICE) officers, and deleted every mention of ICE from its website when journalists asked about it.

🔎 Aviva insures Serco, the company at the heart of the UK's immigration detention system. Serco runs four out of seven UK detention centres, including Brook House and Yarl's Wood, houses more than 40,000 asylum seekers and runs the GPS tagging of migrants.

🔎 Serco is sustaining Israel’s g3n0cidal regime by providing critical military support. The company boasts of its work in “modernising and sustaining core weapons systems,” including naval and aerial platforms used by allied forces, among them Israel’s military. taken in Norwich, UK by @adblocknorwich

Yesterday, one of our supporters @kettlegun measured the air a digital ad screen at an Aylsham Road bus shelter was pumping out. After seeing the same unit fail in early July's heatwave, they found it was over 40°C—more than 20% hotter than the ambient temperature of 33°C.

When temperatures soar, these screens' cooling fans have to work much harder, drawing in hot air and expelling it even hotter. It's a feedback loop: the hotter it gets, the worse the problem.

These screens don't just advertise—they actively make our streets less liveable during heatwaves. Instead of these screens we could have more street trees, which lower the temperature, provide shade and habitat, and reduce air pollution.

Instead: hotter streets, noisier fans, and ads for things we don't need.

We're asking Norwich City Council to require these screens to shut down automatically when temperatures exceed 28°C.

Yet more distracting digital advertising to object to... when exactly WILL the fun end?! 😩

The company behind this proposal (Wildstone) claims the new digital screen is mainly intended for petrol station users (lucky them 🙄)... yet elsewhere in its application admits it’ll also be visible to people travelling along Aylsham Road—which, as anyone who uses it knows, is hardly a quiet or undemanding stretch of road.

They still argue that a screen blasting out 6 adverts a minute won’t distract drivers. We’re not buying it.

If you’re also not overly keen on Norwich’s streets becoming an ever more corporate dystopia, please email your objection to planning@norwich.gov.uk, quoting 26/00640/A in the subject line.

The strongest planning grounds are public safety and amenity. Tell the Council you object because this is already a busy road used by drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, and that another illuminated, constantly changing advertising screen is simply the wrong thing in the wrong place.

Our full objection guide is linked in our bio.

Thank you! 🙏\

This afternoon, a supporter sent us a video of a digital advertising screen at an Aylsham Road bus stop breaking down in the heat. They were worried it might catch fire. As they put it: “It must be using a hell of a lot of energy maxing out the fans… and adding extra heat to an already brutal temperature.”
These screens are a public health hazard. They draw power and dump heat during the moments when it’s most dangerous—and for what? To advertise consumption we can’t afford, for products whose manufacture carries serious environmental cost. The noise pollution from a malfunctioning unit adds to the stress. The wasted energy adds to the heat burden on people already struggling in extreme temperatures. During a climate crisis, this is reckless.
We think these screens should be automatically shut down on hot days. Simple. We’re writing to Bauer Media and Norwich City Council to push for it. taken in Norwich, UK by @adblocknorwich

@avivauk you can't hide your complicity in g3nocide, migrant abuse & climate chaos, by covering it with a tarp...

That's exactly what Matt and Emily from @adblocknorwich have been doing 💪

And you can, too! Adblock groups are the perfect way to stop billboards where you live, and push your local council for changes to advertising and planning policy.

If joining a group's not your thing, there's still loads of ways you can take action.

@greenpartynorwich 🌳are now in control of City Council. The Norwich Greens proposed the motion to implement an ethical advertising policy, that was unanimously passed back in 2021. ❌Yet, the previous Labour administration did nothing to implement this. Now the council is Green - Watch this (adfree) space! 🌱🤞. Thank you to the following who have signed the @adfreecities pledge: Bliss Wylie, Sophia Della Corte, Tammy Searle, Ben Price, Georgia Brumby, Amber Smith and Ashlee Jones. Here’s to hopes for a healthier, happier, ad-free Norwich! 💚 #adfreecities #greenparty #greenpartynorwich #ethicaladvertising #norwichcity by @adblocknorwich
