Bristol becomes the first UK council to ban fast fashion ads on council-owned sites ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’š

The ban comes as part of a wider policy targeting high carbon advertising in the city. Adverts for fossil fuels, SUVs, petrol and diesel cars, flights and cruises are also banned.

Adfree Cities' Co-director Nicola Wilks said: "As a Bristol resident who cares deeply about climate change and air pollution, I am proud that Bristol has gone even further than other UK councils in curbing polluting ads. It feels like common sense."

Anna Bryher, Policy Lead behind Labour Behind the Label, said: "Advertising accelerates ultra-fast cycles of clothing, with increased emissions, excessive water use and poor working conditions for garment workers."

20 other UK councils have introduced restrictions on high carbon advertising. Many other towns and cities around the world are doing the same, including Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Florence.

Why do adverts like this never show you where the food really comes from? What do they have to hide?

We took to the streets of London to find out how people feel about adverts which promote the products of factory farming.

Behind the ads is an industrial farming system which relies on secrecy, controlled by a few big corporations which profit from a system which undermines local, sustainable food, conceals animal cruelty and limits our freedom to make informed choices.

We donโ€™t want factory farming ads.

We deserve a healthy, just and sustainable food system that works for everyone.

๐Ÿ“ข Join our free event to end polluting advertising in London ๐Ÿ“ข Sign-up link in bio ๐Ÿ‘† event details below ๐Ÿ‘‡

In the shadow of Rosebank and Jackdaw, Heathrow 3rd runway, and rampant carspreading, many local authorities across the UK and Europe are taking action to end the influence of major polluters.

Just last month Bristol Council joined Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Florence and Hackney as the latest city to restrict advertising and sponsorship for high carbon products such as fossil fuels, airlines, non-electric cars and in some instances, meat and dairy.

Join our panel of experts to hear how residents, campaigners and policymakers can engage London councils and Transport for London to end the promotion of polluting products in our public spaces.

Speakers:

๐Ÿฅ @carladenyer is the Green MP for Bristol Central. As a councillor, Carla helped introduce a ban on junk food advertising on Bristol Council-owned billboards and screens back in 2021, and supported the recent expansion of that policy to include adverts for ultra-fast fashion, fossil fuels, SUVs and airlines.

๐Ÿฅ @r.n.barker is a councillor and former deputy mayor of The Hague in the Netherlands. The Hague was the first city in the world to legally ban high carbon advertising in public space and Robert was instrumental in accomplishing this.

๐ŸฅCllr @rachaelpenny.greenparty is a green councillor for St Giles Ward in Southwark and a member of Adblock South London - a campaign seeking to reduce the harms of corporate advertising in our neighbourhoods.

The Gag Big Ag campaign is in London today joining Anima in delivering a GIANT petition to Pret calling for an end to their use of frankenchickens.ย

Pret ads glow with promises of healthyย food. But despite pledging 8 years ago to stop using frankenchickens โ€“ birds bred to grow so fast that many canโ€™t even stand up - to this day, Pret's progress bar has shown one number only: 0% ๐Ÿ˜ž

100,000 people have signed the petition to tell Pret they've had enough. Weโ€™re proud to join Anima in bringing the petition to Pret HQ ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’š

SUVs are marketed as family cars, safe for school runs and supermarket trips.

Whilst SUVs can be safer for people *inside* the car, for those *outside* it's another story.

Advertising helps to normalise and glamourise SUVs, even as the harm they cause on our roads becomes clearer by the day.

We need strong action locally and nationally to curb SUV advertising, and to promote safer, fairer alternatives like public transport and active travel.

Take action now by signing this petition to your local council: https://www.petitions.cleancitiescampaign.org/carspreading-uk/ (๐Ÿ”—in bio)

Thanks to @bristol247 for this deep dive on digital advertising in Bristol.

We're proud that our campaigning has stopped many more digital billboards and ad screens appearing across Bristol, but the number of planning applications keeps rising year after year.

Outdoor advertising degrades our public spaces and their unique, historical character. They advertise massive global corporations that siphon money out of the local economy. And they look ๐Ÿ’ฉ

๐ŸšจAround 73% of farmed animals in the UK are kept in factory farms. US-style mega farms have grown by 20% since 2016.

You wonโ€™t see that on a billboard. If they showed the truth, nobody would go near them.

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™ve pledged to ban meat and dairy ads from council-owned billboards in Hackney, making us the first UK borough to do so. Factory farming harms animals, the climate and our health, so why should our streets be selling it?

56% of people in the UK support banning factory farming outright. We banned tobacco ads because of the harm they cause, and Big Ag shouldnโ€™t get a free pass.

Last week, Cllr Alastair Binnie-Lubbock spoke about this and more at โ€œHow Councils Can End Factory Farmingโ€ โ€“ a fringe panel at Green Party conference hosted by @adfreecities ๐Ÿ’š by @adfreecities

Just a few ads we saw around Labour Party Conference in Liverpool this year.

The 30m long digital billboard opposite Lime Street station didn't disappoint this year with rolling ads backing North Sea oil and gas ๐Ÿ˜ž

Which is your favourite??

Bristol has stopped SUV ads ๐ŸŽ‰ so where next?

Ads for SUVs paint them as safe, comfortable family cars. The reality on the streets is very different, with the largest SUVs posing an oversized threat to other road users.

Taking down the ads creates space for us to imagine alternatives. Streets for people, not massive oversized SUVs ๐Ÿ’š

Your council can follow Bristol's example. Sign our petition now to tell your councillors that carspreading needs to stop:

Episode 3 of the Gag Big Ag podcast is now available ๐ŸŽง๐Ÿ’š

We spoke to Claire Ogley from @theoriginalvegansociety about barriers to plant-based diets and why political leadership is needed to help tackle those barriers.

We also discuss the myth of the 'nanny state' and learn that most people actually do want greater regulation of food to ensure what we're eating is healthy and planet-friendly.
