Huge thanks to everyone who came out to the opening of “At the Baths” at @nsuartmuseum this weekend!

I’ve been working on this show for over a year, and I’m so grateful for all of your love and support that’s come through along the way. It meant so much to share this new work with you; exploring the architecture of bathhouses, as spaces for gathering —where social lines blur.

With this show, I wanted to play with traditional ideas around materials and meaning — and to highlight that balance between personal expression and shared experience.

Big thanks to @ariellawolens for your amazing support and for curating the show so thoughtfully!

Thank you to @nsuartmuseum, Bonnie Clearwater, Jordyn Newsome, and the NSU art handlers for bringing this exhibition to life so beautifully.

Special thanks to Felipe Grimberg for your generous support of the exhibition, and to you and Clarita Sredni for your support in acquiring “Legs Up in the Air” for the museum.

And thank you Amanda @bakerhall.art — so grateful!

Thanks @dougmarkowitz for covering my work and this exhibition.

Love to my partner Jason, my mom and my family! And to all of you- THANK YOU 🥰🤍
@dou

Lots of love-

Addison

I’m grateful to share the full article Doug Markowitz wrote about my practice and my solo exhibition, “at the baths,” at NSU Art Museum | Fort Lauderdale. Swipe to read, or find the link in my bio for the full text.

Thank you, Doug, for your thoughtful insights into my work and practice. I was also honored that JPMorgan found and shared this article at a dinner they hosted during Art Basel, where they shared how they were able to clearly see how the themes of my work were present in my abstracted forms, colors, and work. THANK YOU (see last slide)

An insightful talk featuring the curators: @glenn_adamson and @silviabarisione; hosted by @artforum was a great start to Miami Art Week (swipe for event image)

Adamson’s ideas of Art/Design/Craft, caused me to reflect on the subversive “shaking” Shakers   and the crafting of their own world/community – in totality. Connecting all aspects of life: body (separation of sexes), community, politics, economics, physical environments (design, architecture, art); guided by their spirituality and own “inner light” — imbuing all facets of their life with the divine.

It illuminated how proud I am of my maternal family’s (and my grandmother, Mimi)  strong Quaker heritage, the Kellums of Plainfield, Indiana.

And carried forth in my practice today, crafting visions of the world that I would like to see; guided by this quote from bell hooks:
“Queer’ not as being about who you’re having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but ‘queer’ as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and that has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.”

As supported by the vision of the NSU executive director, Bonnie Clearwater, as she has stated: “Medieval methodology is actually perfect for what I’m doing today with contemporary work, because it takes the position that art is interconnected with all aspects of life — society, beliefs, economics, politics. It’s not this rarefied object.”

Come find a moment of quiet reflection and queer community in my solo exhibition, “at the baths,” curated by the curator @ariellawolens; the endowed, Bryant-Taylor Curator at :

FINAL FEW WEEKS 💦🏺

The first known work of homoerotic art is The Tomb of the Diver, an Etruscan fresco dating to approximately 470 BC, located in Paestum. This tomb features four walls of frescoes depicting men reclining at a symposium, crowned by an image of a young male diver leaping off a cliff into the water—possibly symbolizing death.

Throughout the history of queer art, the male figure has frequently been depicted in states of rest—reclining, partially or fully nude, often in communal bath settings such as bathhouses and beaches—blurring the lines between private and public spaces. Mid-century physique magazines like Physique Pictorial and Grecian Guild Pictorial placed nearly nude male figures in settings reminiscent of the classical world. As historian George Chauncey noted, “By imagining they had collective roots in the past, they asserted a collective identity in the present.” These images explored themes of desire, intimacy, loss, and belonging.

In the 1960s and 70s, the Continental Baths, located in the basement of the Astoria Hotel in New York City, echoed the communal baths of ancient Greece. Here, men gathered around pools and steam rooms, forming a cultural hub that hosted performances by Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, and Labelle (Patti LaBelle), contributing to the rise of disco and DJ culture.

The onset of the AIDS epidemic led to a decline in bathhouses, yet these queer cultural institutions continue to exist today. Venues such as Club Fort Lauderdale, Clubhouse II, and 321 Slammer in Fort Lauderdale remain active, while new bathhouses are emerging, including the Russian Turkish Baths and Castle Beach Club in Miami, and Hürrem, opening in Wynwood. These spaces provide not only physical respite but also a sense of community, allowing individuals to escape societal pressures and marginalization.

By exploring the phenomenology of self, other, and environment, these spaces help define what it means to exist in the world—bound and shaped by the implications of our bodies.
