Reflecting on my roots and studying history, after months of collecting and redrawing batik motifs, I finally incorporated them into a single painting.
Drawn with Posca markers on “Kamasan” canvas, most of the motifs are inspired by Batik Peranakan, mostly from Lasem and Pekalongan, Java, Indonesia.

As someone with a mix of Dutch, Javanese, and Chinese Peranakan heritage, this painting journey has deepened my understanding of my roots.

These photo sets are a fun tribute to our history, showcasing vintage images from the colonial era.

The “kipas” batik motif was done a couple of months ago.
This time, we added two “melati” flowers, also dedicated to her roots.

Filling the gaps between existing tattoos with Indonesian ornaments, drawn freehand to fit the space.

Inspired by Parang, Kawung, and Mega Mendung batik motifs, along with ornaments from traditional Balinese carvings.

Added the top section to Shannon’s sleeve,
drawing it freehand with inspiration from Patra Punggel, a motif often found in traditional Balinese carvings.

Patra means leaf, while punggel refers to a cut piece or the tip of a leaf that has been cut off.

Wouter’s sleeve is complete.

Every time I return to the Netherlands, we make a little more progress. This sleeve was created using a combination of stencils and freehand drawing to follow the natural flow of the arm.

Dedicated to his roots, with most of the ornaments inspired by traditional Balinese carvings.
